“What would you like?” I asked indulgently.

“Make love to me?” Smiling, Sean rolled so we were face to face.

“Huh.” I made a surprised noise. “You haven’t called it that before.”

“Yeah, but we’ve done it.” Sean held my gaze, memories of the past few weeks in his eyes.

“I suppose we have.” I nodded slowly. “And now that we have a giant-ass bed in here, we should break it in.”

“We should.” He grinned at me. “But you’re always asking what I want, making sure my bucket list is met. What’s on your list?”

“Well, you are the newbie. And I’m still not convinced you wouldn’t be better off experimenting—”

Sean cut me off with a deft move to flip me to my back. “I don’t need to experiment to know you’re it for me. It’s like having amazing prime rib. I don’t need to rack up a stack of restaurant tabs simply to know a good thing when I find it. And this is a good thing.”

“It is.” I had to agree.

“So, I’ll ask again.” He pinned my arms loosely above my head and smirked down at me. “What would you like?”

I groaned. “What am I going to do with you?”

“Hopefully, it involves your—”

I stretched to silence him with a kiss, letting go when he started to laugh.

“Heart. I was gonna say heart.”

“Uh-huh.” I kissed him until he loosened his hold on my arms and started moving more purposefully against me. “And I’m not sure I have a list. Or a favorite thing. Each time with you is better than the last. Love your mouth. Love grinding like this. Love all of it.”

Love you. I didn’t say it, of course, but I let myself think it for the first time. Merely letting the words trot through my head made my pulse speed up and my palms sweat. But someday. Someday, I might say them aloud.

Sean continued to gaze expectantly down at me, apparently not letting me off the hook.

“You coming pretty much untouched the other night? That was damn hot. Tell me you stashed some lube and condoms up here?”

“You know it.” He pulled a laughably large bottle of lube out from behind a stack of books and a lamp. “And do we really need condoms?”

I worried the inside of my cheek with my tongue. “I’ve never skipped the rubber. Even when high or drunk. Always played it safe and got tested on the regular too.”

“Okay.” Sean shrugged and reached toward his hiding spot again, but I stopped him.

“I trust you,” I said simply. Trust. It was such a fragile, delicate thing. And not something I had a lot of experience with. But he was offering me his trust. Also, for the first time ever, I was staying. Denver Rucker was putting down roots. Business owner. Seemed like the right day for another first. “And there you go, that’s my wishlist item.”

“Yes.” Sean’s eyes flared wide and hot. He rolled off me long enough to remove his clothes with admirable speed. I managed to pull my suit pants and dress shirt off, only bumping my head on the low ceiling twice.

We collapsed back on the bed in a heap of laughter and naked body parts.

“Hopefully, we get used to that ceiling before anyone gets a head injury,” Sean joked before sobering a little. “But, seriously, even without the exposed beams knocking me over, I’m falling for you.”

“Guess I’m gonna have to catch you.” I gathered him close for a long kiss, trying to let him know that I meant it. I’d catch him, give him a soft landing place. He was always so brave, heart right there for the taking. He had mine, had for far longer than I wanted to admit. And maybe I couldn’t give him much, but I could whisper, “And I’m falling too.”

“Good.” Sean tipped his head back, inviting more kisses, which I happily provided. In each kiss, each touch, each moment, I found more peace than I’d ever known. Home. It wasn’t this town or this carriage house or even Sean’s gesture. It was Sean himself, this feeling we created together.

Make love to me, he’d asked, and that’s exactly what we were doing. Making something extraordinary out of two rather ordinary humans. I’d had more than my fair share of bodily experiences—crowd surfed, snowboarded, hiked, and fucked—but what happened with Sean was so much more than skin and neurons.

I gazed down at Sean, in awe that we were here. We traded kisses as I swept my hands all over Sean’s torso. He was so damn responsive, with the slightest touch making him shudder or gasp. And he delightfully liked it all, soft caresses on his sides, tweaks of his nipples, strokes across his chest and belly.

“Now.” Of course Captain Impatient eventually had enough of waiting, arching toward me and using his legs to yank me closer. “Now.”
