“Hey. Careful.” Denver moved his free hand to the back of my neck, anchoring me in place. But not pushing me away, a fact my cock took careful note of.

“See? I clearly need all the tips I can get.”

“You need something all right.” Denver leaned in again, and I eagerly met him, only to bump noses when I tried to tilt in the same direction. “Easy,” he chuckled against my mouth. “Let me.”

Third time was indeed the charm as I let go of the need to initiate and choreograph the kiss. And as it turned out, not thinking was utterly blissful. In my limited past experience, I’d always been the one to drive, so to speak. Similar to being a passenger in Denver’s truck, letting go of control and simply hanging on was the path to the best kiss of my life.

His lips were soft but firm as he took command of my mouth. Heat flooded my body as he coaxed new sensations with each pass of his lips. He licked and nibbled and sipped until I was a puddle of warm goo—no more brain power than a bowl of oatmeal.

“Oh.” A dazed sound escaped my lips, and Denver swallowed the moan that followed. I didn’t have to kiss him back as much as simply give myself over to the experience. My body knew what to do even if my brain was solidly offline. I clutched at Denver’s meaty shoulder and reveled in how his grip tightened on my neck and back. “This is good.”

Denver chuckled at my vast understatement. “Yeah, it is.”

Still laughing, he kissed me again, no false starts this time, a smooth yet devastating claiming. Joy mingled with the heat coursing through me. Fun. This was fun, something I hadn’t at all expected. I made a happy noise, and Denver shuddered as if this were all new to him as well. My lips parted, and Denver delved deeply, the slide of his tongue against mine a heavenly friction. My eyes shut, senses reduced to Denver’s warmth, scent, and touch. My heart pounded, and as unlikely as it was, I swore it was in unison with Denver’s heartbeat. I’d never felt more in sync with another person.

“Want more.” I dropped my hand to his chest, tracing a line down as I unzipped his jacket. He let me explore his torso, but as soon as I reached for his waistband, he stayed my hand.

“Nuh-uh. We’re too old to go home with wet pants.”

“But I have a mouth.” I did an exaggerated pout, a light, bouncy energy surging through me. I’d been the mature one for so very long. The first friend married, first to have kids, and being demanding, almost bratty, was as freeing as a bottle of bubbly. “And I wanna use it.”

“I know you do.” Denver chucked me lightly under the chin. “And you’re too damn tempting.”

Releasing me, he put the truck in gear, and I made a disappointed noise on par with a fumbled football in a playoff game.

“You’re taking me home?”

“For now.”

Oh, there was a world of potential in those words, and I chortled. “So that’s a yes on a repeat?”

“That’s me saying the next time I have your mouth is gonna be in a bed, and I might not let you out for a week.” His tone was a stern warning, but I merely laughed again.

“Don’t threaten me with a good time.”

“You’re trouble.” He shook his head as we headed back down the logging road.

“God, I hope so.” I couldn’t wait to be all the trouble Denver could handle, and soon.

Chapter Eight

Denver

For now. Sean ending up in my bed was rather clearly a matter of when not if. Memories of our heated Sunday kiss lingered as the week started, and my willpower waned, but the opportunity didn’t materialize. I had Monday off, but Sean was on duty, and Tuesday and Wednesday went by without a Sean sighting. Undoubtedly, he was waiting for a summons. Privately, I’d been hoping for another dawn request for a ride to allow my logic to take a backseat to my want.

By Thursday, I was kicking myself for turning down car sex and hoping Sean turned up soon to save me from composing a text message. He’d insisted on exchanging numbers, so I didn’t have that excuse. What I did have was something unfamiliar: fear. Our kiss had rattled me to my core. Whether it was Sean’s enthusiasm or some weird chemistry between us, I’d never been so moved by a kiss. That unprecedented reaction, not any noble impulses, was why I’d pulled back. I needed to steel my nerves before a repeat of the sex.

Of course the smarter move would be no repeat at all, but that same damn chemistry kept me craving more, and I’d never been great at self-denial.
