“Wait,” he said, and I drew back a little. His hand reached down to encircle our cocks, but when it wasn’t a perfect fit, he added his other hand to create friction.

“That feels so good,” I murmured as I swiveled my hips, using my knees on either side of his waist for leverage. He added his thumb with each thrust, and I felt pinpricks all over my body. “Jesus, Ro. I’m gonna come.” I fell forward, my face landing in his neck, where his scent was strongest, as I continued rutting against him.

“So fucking hot,” he said against my ear, and that sent me over the edge.

The room whited out, and I felt Rowan stiffen and shudder, but I was too lost in my own pleasure, and I swore to Christ, I hadn’t come that hard in forever from just having a guy grind his dick against mine.

But not just any guy. This guy. My boss, who was reserved and arrogant but could also be sweet, funny, and vulnerable, and I was apparently wildly attracted to him.

“Are you all right?” he asked, his fingers trailing up my spine.

“I’m awesome. Just can’t move right now,” I panted, trying to get my breathing under control. “How about you?”

“I…yeah.” I could feel all his muscles relax. “I don’t hook up, and I don’t do relationships, not anymore. And tonight, I broke one of those rules.”

“It felt amazing, though, didn’t it?”

He hesitated a beat before nodding. “But, Shae…”

“Shh, don’t ruin it. It was only a one-off. Nothing more.”

The room grew quiet, the only sound our breathing, and I had to admit it felt good lying there in his arms. Affection was underrated, even when it was just a one-time thing and you were trying to stay single.

“Damn, Rowan, you’re warm as a furnace.”

He chuckled, gripping my waist. “I’ll take that as a compliment.” His throaty tone made me shiver. “Let me get something to clean us up.”

And though I felt sticky and sweaty, my limbs heavy as lead, I reluctantly got up, knowing it was time to leave.

He came back with a warm washcloth and wearing another pair of sweats. I made quick work of cleaning myself and getting dressed before too much awkwardness set in. “Gonna take off. Thanks for…you know. And don’t worry too much about it.”

I said it because I knew it was what he needed to hear and because I meant it. Plain and simple. Were we playing with fire? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Hell yes.

“Shae, I… Thanks for bringing my phone.”

“No worries. See you Monday.”

The rest of the weekend with my parents had gone well, though I knew I was acting strange for most of it. Strange because I couldn’t shake what I’d done with my boss. Of course Mom couldn’t stop bringing Rowan up and asking all sorts of questions about him and the show, which I knew was only natural curiosity.

I didn’t tell Casey what went down either because I wanted to keep it to myself. Besides, he would only tell me how wrong that decision had been, and I was beating myself up about it enough. So why couldn’t I stop thinking about how his body felt against mine? How warm and hard but soft in other places?

“You challenge me at every turn.”

Monday morning was awkward but not as bad as the first time we were in this situation. Rowan was his usual arrogant self, barely looking me in the eye as we got a jump start on the day and schedule—even if his cheeks were ruddy with color most of the time.

He was way better at compartmentalizing things, apparently. But what did I expect? It wasn’t like I wanted to discuss it, not really. It had been fun and hot, exactly like a hookup should be. The difference was that normally you were able to walk away and never see that person again. And now that he was in proximity again, I felt I needed some acknowledgment that it affected him too—outside of embarrassment. So fuck him for making me feel good and lousy at the same time. Who was the frustrating one again?

How in the hell did we even get here? Oh yeah, I decided to show up at his place and point out how hot he was, which started everything. Not that he’d been much more restrained. And that was the kicker, wasn’t it? I liked that I could make him unravel.

“Thanks again for the dinner with my parents,” I said before we went over the schedule. “They raved about it all weekend.”

“Of course. Hope the rest of their time was nice.” He lifted his chin self-importantly, in direct juxtaposition to his words. It was why the man had always exasperated me—yet enchanted me too.

“It was busy, and by the end, I think the crowds got to my dad. He was ready to get on that plane.”
