Remy also pulled my mate into a tight hug and told him, “Thank you.” He looked between us and added, “I'm so happy for you both. Now, come inside; I want to hear everything.”

Skyler and I followed him into his kitchen, where we took a seat at Remy’s table as he poured a cup of tea for each of us. I leapt into the story of what my father had done, and how Skyler had found me after so long.

“I heard the rumors your father spread, but I didn’t believe them,” Remy replied. “I knew you would never kill an innocent person out of anger. But I feared he had killed you; I looked for you everywhere, but as the years went by, I started to give up hope.” He gave me a sad smile as he shook his head. “I can’t imagine what it was like in that box.”

I couldn’t put into words how terrible the conditions were, so I decided to focus on something positive instead. “The only thing that kept me from losing all sanity was the hope that one day, my beloved one would hear my cries.” I lifted Skyler’s hand to kiss his knuckles. “And then he saved me, and gave me a new life.”

Skyler smiled warmly at me before turning it to Remy. “So, what about you? Do you have a mate?”

He sighed heavily before answering, “Not yet. But I know one day, Fate will bless me.”

“Have you tried screaming at him with your mind?” Skyler suggested.

“Actually, no. Until I heard your story, I thought the mental connection wasn’t formed between mates until they had already sealed their bond. Perhaps Fate knew you two needed a little extra help.”

“It doesn’t hurt to try,” Skyler shrugged. “Give it a go.”

He and I watched hopefully as Remy went quiet and got a focused expression on his face. After a moment, he gave a head shake. “I guess I will have to meet him in person.” He turned his attention to me and asked, “What was it like?”

Every vampire dreamed of the day they’d meet their mate, so I wasn’t surprised Remy wanted details. “It was everything,” I told him honestly. “When I first looked into Skyler’s eyes, I forgot about my pain and trouble. The only thing that mattered at and since that moment was spending my future loving him.”

My focus was drawn from Remy’s wistful expression when Skyler stood up from his seat. Without a word, he leaned down to kiss me. It was not a sweet, simple kiss; he sank his tongue into my mouth and lapped until I couldn’t breathe. When he pulled away, his pupils were dilated and the scent of his arousal hung in the air. I was positive Remy could smell it as well.

Remy. I’d lost myself in Skyler and forgot all about my friend. As my mate took his seat once more, I gave Remy a sheepish look and told him in a whisper that only his keen ears would hear, “I’m sorry.” I didn’t want Skyler to think I regretted the kiss; I could never. I also didn’t want to potentially offend my friend.

“Don’t be,” Remy whispered back. “It makes me happy to see you happy.”

He had a wonderful heart, but I knew it had to be difficult for him. “I know the waiting is lonely.”

Remy smiled and turned to Skyler to ask, “Did Viggo tell you how we met?” When my mate shook his head, Remy continued, “A few centuries ago, I was sitting in a pub, having a beer and watching the bartender - he was a beautiful young man, and I couldn’t help but stare. But apparently, I was watching him a little too closely; Viggo sat down next to me and told me to be careful.”

“Why the hell did you care?” Skyler snapped, turning an angry glare on me. “Did you want the beautiful man too?” The incident happened hundreds of years ago, yet he still showed jealousy, which made me happier than it should have. Still, he had the situation all wrong.

But before I could explain, Remy continued, “Viggo’s warning was for my protection; there was a group of men watching me with scowls on their faces. Apparently, they'd caught me ogling the man and were planning on making me pay for it.

“In those days, people saw being gay as filthy, or even an act against God. They took it upon themselves to punish or even kill those who took part in it.”

“That's fucked up,” Skyler interjected. “I've dealt with bigots and bullies, but never like that. But couldn't you guys just kick the asses of any humans who bothered you?”

“We are stronger and faster than humans,” Remy agreed, “And they are no match for us in a fight, but the men in that bar weren't only humans; there were vampires as well. A battle between vampires will always get ugly, and usually end in death.”
