“What, were you watching us fuck through the window, too? You probably liked it, you sick bastard. Maybe that's why you have such a boner against-”

Skyler’s words stopped when my father cut into his throat with the glass. The moment the scent of his blood hit my nostrils, I pounced, reacting on instinct. I had to protect my beloved.

I leapt across the bed and shoved my father, sending him stumbling out the window as Skyler collapsed onto the floor. He clutched his throat as blood poured between his fingers.

I grabbed the corner of the blanket from the bed and pressed it to his neck. “Hold pressure on the wound. It's okay, my love. Your body will heal more quickly now that-”

I stopped speaking when motion behind me captured my attention. My father leapt back into the room and in a flash, gripped my hair with one hand. He tipped my head back and buried his glass blade into my throat, violently hacking at the flesh. Tears streamed from Skyler's wide eyes as he watched in terror.

But I wasn't giving up. My father may be faster and stronger, but I had something to fight for. I covered his hand with mine and squeezed, crumbling the bones in his fingers. When his grip loosened, I threw him across the room. He slammed into the wall, cracking through the layers of drywall and sending particles flying.

With his decapitation attempt failed, my skin quickly knitted back together. I leapt to his side just as he got to his feet. His hand reformed and slammed into my face, splitting my jaw and sending me to the floor.

Changing targets, Father rushed towards Skyler, but I managed to grab his ankle and pull him to the ground. He kicked my face, shattering my nose, but I didn’t let him go. If he got to my mate, it was over.

My father reached out and swatted at the dresser, making it crash down upon me, breaking my arm and releasing my grip. A moment later, Skyler’s mangled scream rang out.

I shrugged off the furniture and jumped to my feet as my bones fused back together. Father had his hands around Skyler’s throat, but my mate wasn't going down without a fight. He was clawing at his attacker's face, but his strength was obviously waning.

Anger burned inside me. I broke off a piece of the wooden drawer and slammed into my father, knocking him away from my gasping mate.

I pinned him to the wall with one hand around his throat. No matter how he fought or struggled, he couldn't escape. Seeing my beloved in danger unlocked strength I never knew was within me. My blood ran hot. My fangs ached with the need to taste revenge.

I pressed the pointed tip of the wood to Father's chest. His eyes widened and his words came fast. “You cannot kill me. I'm your father!”

I leaned in close, staring into his black eyes and spoke words I hoped made my beloved proud, “Look upon my field of fucks and see that it is barren.”

Father's gaze was full of confusion, panic, and perhaps even a flash of respect as I sank the stake into his chest. His warm blood gushed over my hand as I pierced his heart. I twisted the wood for good measure, and he released a low groan as the light left his eyes.

I dropped his body to the floor and rushed to Skyler. “Are you alright? What do you need?”

His voice was hoarse when he replied, “I'm okay.” I inspected his throat, sighing in relief when I saw the gash had closed. There were bruises on his skin from being squeezed, but they were fading quickly.

I took him in my arms and kissed his soft hair, deeply breathing in his scent.

“Are you okay?” he asked, and I nodded.

“My injuries heal instantly.”

“That's good. I was so scared when he was cutting your throat.” He squeezed me tighter and I kissed his head again. “But I mean, are you okay mentally? The guy was a total ass goblin who deserved to die, but he was still your dad.”

I looked over at the crumpled, lifeless body and shook my head. “He was no family of mine.” He gave up that right when he spilled innocent blood and imprisoned me. He hated everything I was. He tried to take Skyler's life. There was no remorse in my heart for what I did to the wretched being. “You are my family. You're everything I need.”

“You're everything I need too,” he replied into my chest, nuzzling into me.

For the next several minutes, I held him in silence, soaking up the feeling of his body in my arms. I caressed my hands over him, needing to feel that he was in one piece and uninjured.

“That field of fucks line was badass,” he finally said, making me chuckle.
