Maybe it’s because I’ve already kissed his twin, or because Max is so much more of a flirt, but the energy between us is entirely different, zero to one hundred in mere seconds.

His hands roam my body while his mouth possesses mine. “The way you look in that bikini has been driving me wild.” He punctuates this with more demanding kisses, while I send silent thanks to Marissa for packing this swimsuit, and to myself for having the nerve to wear it.

“I was afraid I’d do something inappropriate in front of your family,” he says.

My words come out thick and breathy. “Like what?”

Both of his hands cup my face as his body presses mine against the rough brick of the wall. “I want to touch you everywhere.”

I want that, too. I want that so badly, but something inside holds me back from saying it. But I don’t hold back from kissing him, not when his hands slide down over my shoulders, along my arms, and to my hips, where his fingers dig into my flesh.

His arms are bare in his tank top, and my hands slide over his smooth skin, over the bulge and plane of each muscle, down to his thick forearms, with their coarse covering of hair.

His hips push against me and then I feel him, thick and hard under his swim trunks, his erection pressing into my belly. The feel of him, and the thought of his excitement has me desperate for him.

He twines our fingers together, a move that adds sweetness to the spice, and it’s that feeling that has me breaking away.

“We shouldn’t— we can’t …”

He glances to the side as if just realizing where we are. “Not here.”

“Not anywhere. Not now, anyway.” I have the wherewithal to pull away, but not to rule it out completely.

As soon as he steps back, I miss his body like it’s part of my own, and how ridiculous is that? I came in here not wanting any man, and now I’m falling hard for two. Two brothers, to make matters worse.

I’m so confused.

I knew they might kiss me during our pretend relationship, but I never thought I would like it so much. I never thought it would feel so real.

“We should get back.”

Max rakes a hand through his hair. “Sure. I just need a minute.”

When he’s ready, we start back. He doesn’t try to hold my hand, and I’m glad, because it’s already difficult to think clearly, and physical contact would only make it worse.

He touches my back occasionally, though, when we pass others on the path and he steps behind me to make space. I try to keep my mind on the party and my obligations, but I have the repeated urge to push Max behind some bushes and finish what we started.

Then I think of Miles and my chest tightens.

As we reenter the pool area, Max does take my hand, wrapping his hand around my palm with a reassuring warmth. “You okay?”

“I guess so.”

He turns the full wattage of his smile on me, and a good portion of my worries melt away.

Maybe I’m making too big a deal of things. All I’ve done is kiss them. Kissing is innocent.

I know the thoughts swirling around my head aren’t innocent, but nobody needs to know about those thoughts but me.

“Are you ready to dance?” Max gestures toward the group in front of the deejay table, which has more than doubled in size since we left.

“Sure.” I’m actually not sure that doing a physical activity with Max, even here in front of so many people, is a good idea, but maybe moving my body will help channel and release some of the energy built up by lust.

He finds a clear spot for us among the other couples and groups who are dancing. Coincidentally, a song about dancing is playing, and Max immediately shows himself to be smooth and skillful, swaying and gyrating in ways that do nothing to cool my desire.

He touches me frequently, all part of his moves, while his eyes make me feel like I’m the only person here.

Dancing was a very bad idea for a distraction, because all I can think about is that if he can move this well to the music, he must surely be amazing in bed. And based on the way he was kissing me, I’m sure all I’d need to do is say the word …

Except there’s Miles.

CHAPTER 33

CALLIE

“Yoo-hoo, Max!” After the roller rink today, I shouldn’t be at all surprised to see Aunt Iris out here cutting a rug. In a voluminous purple paisley beach cover-up, her arms held wide, she wiggles her way over to us, keeping time with the beat.

I brace myself for a barrage of inappropriate comments, but when he smiles at her and offers a friendly wave, she simply gives him a wink and says, “Looking good!” before turning and dancing her way over to another group.
