So I did what I should have done the moment Hunter raised his damn paddle and bid his way back into my life.

“Ah, fuck it,” I muttered. Then I fisted the front of his shirt, yanked him close, and shut him up with my mouth.

Our lips crashed together, and something inside of me let out an epic sigh of relief. Here. Finally. The man’s mouth is exactly where it should be.

And just like that, all of the anger that had been burning me up transmuted itself into a desperate passion that was no less hot but a whole hell of a lot more honest than our bickering had been.

At first, Hunter grappled with me, and I had a moment’s panic that I’d misread the signs, that he didn’t want me at all. But as soon as I tried to pull back, he grabbed my head and held it tightly, deepening the kiss and grumbling into my mouth with a wordless warning not to pull away, not to stop a kiss I didn’t want to end in the first place.

I grabbed him around his waist, dragging him even closer as if I could make our bodies merge into a solid block of never-stop. As I moved a hand down to grab his ass, I wondered fleetingly if this would earn me extra credit points in my mother’s niceness bet.

Because this hot encounter with Hunter Jackson was one of the nicest things I’d experienced in a long, long time.

Chapter Six

HUNTER

Charlie’s kiss was so fucking wild, so feral, so exactly what I’d been craving, I didn’t care how foolish and shortsighted I was being. I needed more.

So, I did what any hot-blooded gay man would do when faced with the sexy, riled-up turkey who’d invaded his brain.

“Let me suck you off,” I begged, gasping between kisses. “Please, Charlie. Fuck.”

Charlie grunted an enthusiastic agreement and moved his hands to his fly, and I decided to help by moving my hands to the delectable ass that had been taunting me for… Jesus, had it really only been a day? It felt like way longer. Like forever.

I’d barely managed an appreciative squeeze of the thick muscle—really, more people should consider adding Peloton and paperweights to their gym routines, if this kind of glory was the result—and allowed a single tortured groan to slide out of my throat before the sound of Morgan Waller’s “Last Night” playing at top volume pierced the air, followed by the crunch of gravel as someone braked to a hard stop on the gravel driveway just outside the barn.

In the space of a single gasping breath, Charlie and I sprang apart from each other like we were still kids who’d gotten caught with our hands in a cookie jar.

Thinking about Charlie’s cookie jar was only going to make the situation worse, so instead, I fixed him with a hard look. “Nothing happened,” I hissed in warning.

His forehead crinkled, and his kiss-swollen lips pursed in confusion. “As in, it didn’t happen yet, but you’d like it to? Or as in, you’re denying the fact it was absolutely going to happen if we hadn’t been interrupted? Because—”

I threw up my hands and cut him off with a whispered, “Either! Both. I don’t know! Just stop talking about it, okay?”

Charlie’s eyes widened at my reaction, and I could hardly blame him.

I’d been just as into that kiss as he had, but I also knew that whoever was approaching the barn—probably someone from my family, and please, baby Jesus, not my mother—would freak right the fuck out if they knew what he and I had been up to. At a minimum, I’d be teased about getting caught on my “date” with Junior Nutter for the rest of my born days, long after the man left the Thicket. At worst, my mother would decide hooking up with him was a cry for help.

Charlie glanced behind me to make sure no one had entered yet before narrowing his eyes and lowering his voice. “Don’t tell me you didn’t want it.”

I opened my mouth to say exactly that, but the lie wouldn’t come off my tongue.

His frown turned into a knowing grin as my sister’s distinctive speed-walking pace hit the hardwood floor. “I’ll be back tonight.” He met my eyes, and I felt the burn deep in my gut. “To finish what we started.”

As he turned and made his way out of the barn, exchanging polite greetings with Alana, I stared after him.

Was that a threat or a promise?

My dick throbbed in horny confusion. I tried desperately to change the direction of my thoughts before my sister got close enough for an awkward encounter. Thankfully, the sound of Charlie slamming the door to his side-by-side jerked me out of my haze.

He was angry again, and I wasn’t sure whether it was because we’d kissed… or because we’d been interrupted.
