Nox’s silver eyes grew wide.

“Then I’ll breed you—but not now,” he said firmly. “Don’t forget, we’re still in the wrong universe. If I breed you and get you pregnant, we might never get home!”

“Oh, right…” Seline nodded, trying to get it through her head. Her thoughts felt clouded by lust and need. Despite the long, strong orgasm Nox had given her when he healed her, she still wanted so much more.

“I’m sorry you’re having a hard time, sweetheart.” Nox cupped her cheek and looked into her eyes, his face filled with compassion and worry. “But for your sake, I want to get us home to our own universe. What if your pregnancy has complications? I want to be aboard our version of the Mother Ship to be sure you’re properly taken care of before I Bond you to me and get you pregnant in the first place.”

“That…makes sense.” Seline took several deep breaths, trying to control the need inside her. Slowly, she began to feel less desperate—though the emptiness within persisted. “All right…I’m feeling a little better now,” she told him. “I still want you inside me, but I guess I can wait.”

“Good.” Nox stroked her hair away from her face. “I’m going to see if I can locate the Mother Ship in this universe. Hopefully they can fold space for us and we can use the Far Box to get home.”

Seline frowned uncertainly.

“Do you really think they can?”

“I hope so,” Nox said grimly. “If they can’t or won’t, then we’ll be stuck here, in this universe, forever.”

FORTY-FOUR

NOX

“This is the Kindred Mother Ship, please identify yourself unknown caller.” The voice coming from the com-link was female—rather unusual since the Kindred had a genetic variation which insured that 95% of them were male. But Nox didn’t care—he was simply relieved that the Mother Ship in this universe had answered his call.

It had taken him hours to locate the ship—it was light years away. Luckily his own ship had been modified with boosters on the communications equipment, so he had been able to reach out to them, though only with audio—the distance was too far to carry visuals. Now, finally, they were answering.

“Mother Ship, this is Commander Nox—I am of Blood Kindred origin,” he said, deciding not to mention his Quix DNA just yet. “I have a unique problem and I would like permission to speak with your leader, Commander Sylvan.”

“Do you mean Commander Sylvania?” the voice returned.

Nox and Seline exchanged a glance. Well, he had known there was a possibility of variations, Nox thought to himself. It was the one percent differential again—it certainly came up in the oddest places.

“Yes, of course,” he answered, because what else could he say?

“State your business in its entirety,” the female voice ordered. “Leave out no details. I must know if your request is worth bothering the Commander with or not.”

Nox took a deep breath but Seline beat him to it.

“Hi, I’m Seline—I work for the Kindred with Commander Nox and I’m from a planet called Earth,” she said quickly. “Nox and I were on a mission to retrieve a Kindred relic—the Far Box—when we got diverted to another universe. This universe. Now we need some help to get home. Please, please let us speak to Commander Sylvan—I mean, Sylvania!”

There was a long pause and Nox wondered if she had said too much. It sounded like a fantastic tale, after all—being diverted to another universe. But stranger things had happened. At least, he hoped they had in this universe.

At last the voice spoke again.

“Since you claim to be of Kindred Origin, I will see if the Commander can speak with you,” the voice from the viewscreen told him.

Nox felt like he was holding his breath the whole time they waited. Seline leaned over from the passenger seat and whispered,

“Did that sound too crazy? What if they won’t agree to help us?”

“If they refuse, we will take wormholes until we get to their location,” Nox said firmly. “Maybe we can gain entrance to the Mother Ship and see them in person to try and convince them.”

The wait was so long he was already plotting the course of stable wormholes in his head when the voice from the viewscreen finally spoke again.

“Commander Sylvania wishes to hear your story in person,” the female on the other end informed them. “How long will it take you to get to our location?”

“Approximately five solar days, as long as the wormholes on my present maps are all stable,” Nox informed her.

“Wait for a moment,” the voice told them.

The pause was much shorter this time before the voice came back on.

“Five days is too long—our Commander’s interest is piqued,” it informed them. “Send us your coordinates—we will fold space to your location.”

“I will transmit them at once,” Sylvan told her. “However, you should know that we are currently located in a solar system being occupied by the Scourge.”
