Colt got to his feet and cupped her face. “And he took your mother. This is not karma. The son of a bitch will pay for what he did.”

“It’s not going to bring her back. This was useless.” She sniffled. “I guess when he’s dead and gone once and for all, we can get that divorce.”

He kissed her. “Shut up.”

“Isn’t it what you want?” she asked.

“What I want is for you to let me take care of you.”

Rosalie seemed to sway on her feet. She didn’t sleep at all last night. He’d stayed watch over her the whole night. Now, she looked ready to drop at any minute.

“Something happened to Petal,” Rosalie said. “I saw it in her eyes. There’s a darkness that wasn’t there before.”

He stared at his wife and he knew something was going on and he had a feeling it was with Dirty, but he couldn’t say anything.

“The funeral,” Rosalie said. “I’ve got to organize the funeral.” She let out a low laugh. “Do you think I should call Daddy and tell him he’s invited?” She burst out laughing.

Colt wrapped his arms around her and held her close. She was falling apart and needed support now more than ever. There hadn’t been any time between her being beaten and now. Her body was too fragile. He held her tightly, trying to give her all the support and comfort she needed.

“I bet Dad would get a kick out of it. I wonder if he’s celebrating.”

Colt didn’t know.

He had a feeling Gabrielle wasn’t supposed to be there.

“I want to kill him,” Rosalie said.

“He’ll die,” Colt said.

“When?” she asked.

“Soon.” He would make sure he put a bullet in that man’s head.

He dried Rosalie and urged her into his bedroom, where he dressed her in his clothes. “I’m going to get you something to eat.”

“I can’t eat anything,” Rosalie said.

“You have to.” He looked around the room. “Stay here. I’m going to get you some soup or something. Petal is counting on me to help you.”

She smiled. “Petal always takes care of me.”

Colt nodded. He was going to take care of her.

He helped her into bed, tucking the sheet up her legs. “I’m going to get some food. I’ll call Dirty at the hospital, get an update on Petal, okay?”

Rosalie looked at him. “Do you want to kill me?”

“No. I don’t.” He pressed a kiss to her lips and then stepped out of the room, blowing out a breath.

He felt her pain.

Leaving his bedroom, he made his way downstairs. The club brothers all looked at him, but he ignored them and headed into the kitchen to find something to feed her. Myth was there, and he looked miserable as well.

“How is she?” Myth asked.

“Not good. Really not good.” Colt opened the cupboards, hoping to find something that would help feed her. There were cans of soup but the images on the front looked more like vomit. “Are any of these good?”

“The tomato one isn’t too bad, but nothing will beat your mother’s cooking.”

He closed the cupboards and went to the fridge and freezer. “Any of her leftovers?”

“No, they never last at the club.”

Colt slammed the freezer shut. “Soup it is.”

He grabbed one of the cans of soup and stared down at it. Chicken noodle. He didn’t even know if she liked those flavors.

“How are you?”

“I’m fine.”

“You saw it all happen, I know you were there with your sister—”

Colt spun toward Myth and glared. “I said I’m fine.”

Myth held his hands up. “Sorry, I just … if you want someone to talk to, I’m here.”

“I’m fine.” Yes, it did bring up shitty memories. It was like reliving Nancy’s death all over again, only this time he saw Rosalie as him. The sounds she made, he imagined weren’t much different.

Losing anyone was hard. Rosalie had loved her mother. To her, Gabrielle had been a saint. She didn’t know that in the beginning, Gabrielle wanted an abortion, or to give her up. Rosalie only knew the good that Gabrielle had done. He wasn’t going to tell her the truth. That died with Gabrielle.

Colt had liked the older woman. She was a nice person, a friendly soul, and she’d been hurt too many times by Daemon.

The door to the kitchen opened and shut and he looked to see it was his father.

“Your mother’s on her way. Petal is stable and fine. The doctors have advised that she needs rest, she lost a lot of blood and the toll on her body isn’t great.”

Colt nodded. “So I can’t take Rosalie.”

“No.”

“Figures. It’s just going to be another reason for her to hate me.” He stirred the soup and it looked rancid, even smelled it, but he was going to have to feed it to her.

“How is she?” Warden asked.

“Broken.”

“These next couple of weeks will be the hardest. Kim and I can handle the funeral arrangements.”
