“I doubt it. Mac wants everything to be perfect first.”
“Don’t you think he should talk to her if he’s making big plans for their future?”
“We are talking about Mac here. I’m surprised they talk at all, with the sparks flying between the two of them.”
“They do give off a lot of sizzle,” I admitted. “But she’s a smart woman. He should include her in his plans.”
“He probably should. But he won’t.”
I sighed and parked beside Suzanna’s ancient hatchback and Mac’s pickup. He must be inside with Suzanna. He’d driven her here but had told Donnie he didn’t want her alone for a second with that scummy lawyer around.
I frowned, realizing Mac didn’t know yet if he still had his job running the development site. It was funny to think that it was the project that had not only brought them together but was now accelerating their relationship to moving in after only a couple of weeks. Even though it had started out as something bad for Suzanna, it might end up being the best thing that ever happened to either one of them.
“Do you think Mac would be moving her in already if this whole situation hadn’t evolved?”
Donnie nodded without hesitation.
“Yeah, he’s fully cooked. Stick a fork in him because he is done. The poor slob doesn’t want her out of his sight, and it has nothing to do with any danger,” he said. He looked at my raised eyebrow and changed his tone. “When you know, you know, Babe. There’s no escaping it when you find the perfect woman. I should know.”
I rolled my eyes but let him kiss me.
Men, I thought again, shaking my head as we got out of the car. He was lucky he was so mind-blowingly good in bed. And cute. And a wonderful husband and father. He was a bit over-the-top romantic sometimes. It had taken me a while to trust that he meant what he said. Now I absolutely loved it. He meant what he said.
I was smiling by the time we stood at Suzanna’s front door. Donnie gave me an evil smirk when I knocked and gently nudged me out of the way. He just pushed open the door. Mac and Suzanna jumped apart like two cats.
I swatted my husband.
“You did that on purpose,” I hissed. He winked at me and ambled into the cottage, ducking his head because the place was so tiny. I looked around after saying hello and accepting a cup of coffee from a blushing Suzanna.
“This place is stinking adorable,” I said in awe. Suzanna heard me and grinned.
“I know, right?” She glanced at the guys and frowned a little. “Not that it’s exactly practical.”
We both stared at our men. It was true. They barely fit.
“What if this was just your office? And you lived… somewhere else?”
She looked at me in surprise. I saw Donnie and Mac nodding.
“Hell, yes, she is moving.”
“Mac, you can’t just decide that,” Suzanna said. “I need to make my own decisions.”
“I can, and I will.” He looked at me, and I swore I could see bull horns and a tail materialize. I had never seen mild-mannered Mac like this. Not even close. “She isn’t staying here by herself. It’s not safe.”
“Well…” she said, chewing her lip.
“Mac is right,” Donnie offered. “And if it gives him an excuse to get you under his roof, all the better. He’s got it bad. Put the poor guy out of his misery already.”
Suzanna turned bright pink. She opened her mouth and no words came out. But Mac didn’t seem to mind Donnie’s teasing even a bit. He lifted her off her feet to kiss her and set her down again. He pushed her hair away from her face.
“I don’t need an excuse, but this is a good reason. We discussed this. No arguments.”
She bit her lip and gave him a look that said neither yes nor no. Mac was so distracted by her mouth that he kissed her again without realizing she hadn’t agreed with him. I nodded my approval.
Smart girl.
“I’ll check in around lunch.”
I was smiling as Donnie walked him out.
“So,” I said, trying not to pepper her with a million questions.
“So.”
“Moving in together.”
She pulled a face.
“It’s all happening so fast. He’s…” She sighed dreamily, like a teenager in a 1950s movie. I chuckled. “Amazing.”
“Yeah, he is. He’s a really, really good guy. There isn’t anyone like him.”
“I know,” she said. But she pointed her finger at me. “You have to say that though. You are his sister-in-law.”
“Guilty. Well, cousin-in-law, but Mac might as well be Donnie’s brother. And I have never, ever seen him like this with a woman. I’ve never actually seen him with any woman.”
“He told me he hasn’t dated anyone in a long time,” she said. “I haven’t either. Ever, really.”
There was that dreamy sigh again. I stood up and rolled up my sleeves.
