I nodded. “You got it.”

I stepped out to talk to the guys at the gate. I told them about Suzanna and to be real fucking polite to the lady when she showed. I could tell she mattered to Mac, even though he wasn’t doing much talking.

Of course, the guys who worked with him had already filled us in. Pretty lady. Hated the new development. Had yet to fuck Mac, though things were heading that way.

Thus the need for all that physical labor he was doing.

I shook my head with a smile. I did not have that problem. My lady was hotter than hell and liked to climb me like a tree. I was a lucky man and getting laid almost every night. Usually more than once.

I decided not to mention that to Mac. I was afraid he might start crying. The man was so pent-up he looked like he might explode when I came back into the room.

I took my same spot and watched Mac work. Cal was still there. In no time, Drake and Kyle showed up too. They offered to help but Mac waved them off. Whiskey showed up. And Nick. Eventually, nearly all of the Devil’s Riders were standing in the big fucking stockroom, watching Mac lift heavy boxes of booze and stack them like he was lifting air.

Mac was jacked and getting more so by the day, it seemed like. The man was apparently doing push-ups every time his dick got hard.

Which, by the looks of it, was a lot.

I heard a woman’s voice and pushed away from the wall. It didn’t sound like one of the club girls. She was well-spoken and sounded upset.

“Mac.”

He lifted his head, looking like a caged animal.

“She’s here.”

We stared in awe as she came into the room. Mac was on her in an instant. He cupped her face, staring at her like she was made out of gold. Or really good tequila. A bottle of gold tequila.

He looked at her like she was the most precious thing on earth.

Fuck. Now I was really worried. This girl had better be good enough for Mac. I was suddenly afraid she was going to hurt him.

She was a knockout, the kind of girl who could have had a dozen guys on a string if she wanted them. Then again, my girl had been quite the flirt, and look how we’d turned out. If she was toying with Mac, I would sick Janet on her, I decided.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m sorry to just show up here. I didn’t know where else to go.”

“Suzanna. What happened?”

She bit her lip and looked up at him with damp eyes. She looked shaken. I frowned, no longer worried about Mac’s tender feelings. Something bad had gone down.

“He threatened me.” Her voice broke. “He said if I didn’t sell, they would make my life… hard.”

I stood up straight. So did all the guys standing around and eavesdropping on their conversation. One thing you did not do around us was threaten a woman.

“Okay. Listen to me. That’s not going to happen.”

She nodded.

“Shit, you’re shaking, baby.”

“Calliope is in the car. I threw a few things in a bag. I forgot to bring cat food.”

“That’s okay. We can give her meat tonight and get food tomorrow.”

I exchanged a glance with Donnie. This was bad. Heads were going to roll. But we were still amazed at how much Mac was talking. That was more words than we’d heard him say in any given week.

Hell, it was more talking than he generally did in a month, other than taking orders at the bar or running his construction crew.

“Look, baby, I need to take care of a few things. I’ll get you guys all set up in my place.”

I frowned, feeling uncertain. Mac lived in a little house near Donnie’s property. It was in the middle of nowhere. The good thing was that it would be hard for anyone to approach unnoticed since a ton of our guys lived on that street.

But it was also really easy to find.

“I’ll call Molly,” Callaway said. “She can sit with you. And she probably has something for the cat.”

Cal’s girl was a real sweetheart. She loved kids and animals. We all loved her like a little sister already.

“Maybe they should go to the cabin,” Nick drawled. We all looked at him. He might look like he was taking an open-eyes nap most of the time, but apparently, he wasn’t.

“That’s a real good idea,” I said. Everyone turned to look at me. I was Dev’s second, and my thoughts meant something. Plus, all these motherfuckers knew I didn’t mess around.

Not when it came to protecting our own, or an innocent, even if they weren’t part of our family. If Mac was falling for this girl, she was both. And it was plain as day that he wasn’t just falling. He was already on the ground.
