As a result, I’m sitting in an upscale bar now, clad in a sexy cocktail dress as Bruce talks to me about something. He’s handsome enough, I suppose. His chestnut hair is neatly brushed, and he’s wearing a dark suit which emphasizes his lean, athletic figure. But the problem is that he’s small, at least in comparison to Casey, Brad, and James. Don’t get me wrong because my date’s at least five ten or eleven. But that doesn’t compare to the three partners of Rose Law, who are easily over six feet tall. If I had to guess, they’re in the six three to six four range, and not an inch less.

“Hmmm?” I ask, startled out of my reverie for a moment. “I apologize, I just spaced out there.”

Any other man would be dissuaded by my obvious disinterest, but Bruce merely leans forward, his hazel eyes mischievous.

“So I’ve heard about your performances,” he says in a low, thrumming voice. “You know, at Club Z?”

Oh shit, he knows about the club. At first, I try to pretend ignorance.

“I’m sorry, what?” I ask, squinting at him. “I’m not sure I know what you’re talking about.”

Bruce merely sits back and smiles like the cat that got into the cream.

“Don’t play dumb, Carrie,” he chides. “Everyone’s been talking about the new unicorn that showed up, and word on the street is that she’s beautiful and horny. She’s been dallying with three men, and not even doing it in one of the private play spaces. She’s doing it out in the open and her name … dun dun dun … just happens to be Carrie Burkhart. What are the chances?”

I curse myself because goddamnit, I was supposed to be Viola but I completely forgot. Some call girl I’m turning out to be.

“Oh that,” I say in a light tone. “That’s nothing.”

“That’s not nothing,” Bruce corrects with a spark to his eyes. “That’s a lot, honey. I’ve been hearing tales of your beautiful backend rosebud, and I have to say that I’m intrigued. I’d love to see you present it, Carrie. Nude, and on your knees with that tasty flower up in the air for my pleasure. I’d absolutely worship it.”

Now, if this conversation had taken place six months ago, I would have jumped into action. I would have pulled Bruce from his seat before leading him to my apartment and giving him a good eyeful of my prolapse to kiss, lick and suck any way he wants. But now, this man leaves me dry. Not just figuratively, but literally too. There’s no warmth in my pelvis, and my sweetest spot definitely isn’t juicing. Instead, it resembles a desert down there, and I shoot Bruce a wan smile while stalling for time.

“Oh really,” I mumble. “Hmm, interesting.”

Bruce nods, a lock of brown hair falling over his forehead.

“Yep,” he chortles. “Trust me, baby, I can make it worth your while. And I would have called you after that dinner party at Ramona and Carlton’s place, but life got away from me, so I apologize for that. But better late than never, right? Here I am, and here you are too,” he winks. “We’re ready to rumble.”

His words make my stomach churn, but I manage to smile weakly at him again.

“Yeah, you never called,” I say in a neutral tone. “But now you’re interested. Funny how that happens, hmm?”

He nods.

“The grapevine at Club Z works fast,” he says before smirking like he’s got a secret. “I bet you had no idea that I was a member. But that’s what’s great about the club. The men are clients, and the women service them, so it works out well for all parties, don’t you agree?”

I narrow my eyes at him because in fact, I don’t agree. The set-up only works if the guys are handsome, generous, and most of all, if the women want to be with them. That’s the best part of Club Z. They don’t force the hostesses to do anything they don’t want to, and that’s what makes the institution a smashing success.

Meanwhile, I’m quickly getting tired of this date. It’s so ironic because I schemed and planned on how to enrapture Bruce, and yet it’s so blah to finally be here. This joker was the object of my desire for what feels like an eternity, but the fact is that he’s been replaced by someone else, or should I say, three someone elses. With sudden clarity, I know that Bruce means nothing to me, and that I’m wasting my time. In fact, this entire conversation is boring, and with a sigh, I slide off my barstool.

“Sorry, bud, but I have to go.”

The handsome man genuinely looks surprised.

“So soon? But we just got started.”

I shoot him a smile.

“Yeah, but pressing matters call. I’ll see you around, okay?”

His jaw drops as he stares at me.
