I hear him pull up and come into the house two hours later, but I stay quiet and finish up the last chapter of my book. When he doesn’t find me, he goes on a hunt, shouting from room to room.

“Theo, I’m in the kitchen,” I call out from my perch leaning over the island.

He pushes the door open, and I see relief and anger cross his face. “Shit. You scared the fuck out of me.”

“Why? Did you think I ditched you?” The sex scene I read hasn’t got shit on the way Theo looks right now. His eyes are dark and his jaw taut. My pussy clenches as I see his messed-up hair. He does that when he’s anxious.

“Yeah.”

“I thought you said the security is tight around here.”

“They are…never mind.” I can see something’s on his mind, but I don’t push it. He’s worried about me leaving. I’m not sure if it’s because he likes his plaything, or if it’s much more than that.

“I’ve made dinner.”

“Where’s Griselda?”

“With Diego.”

“And he’s supposed to be here protecting you.”

“Um... I sent them out earlier.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because he was about to hump her in the kitchen if I didn’t walk in, and this is our spot.”

“Damn right. I don’t know what I’m going to do about those two.” He slips off his suit jacket and sets it on the stool.

“Is there something to do?” I question. I thought he said she was just someone he thought needed a hand.

“Not really, but I’m sure he doesn’t want her slaving away for us all day.”

I smile at that. Okay, I get it. I know Theo has no intention of letting me work out of the house unless it’s as his assistant or a job that’s close to his office. “Well, I can cook, you know?”

“I can smell it, but I don’t want you cooking all day either.”

“I need something to do between being on my back,” I toss out. Most days, I’m pretty bored. If it wasn’t for Griselda, I’d have no one to talk to. Diego speaks here and there, but it’s mostly grunts and growls, which are always directed at her. She likes to find ways to work him up. It’s cute as hell and reminds me of Theo. Hell, he’s hardly ever out of my thoughts. I love the fool, or maybe I’m the fool.

He comes from around the island, sliding his hands around my waist and tugging me into his arms, kissing my forehead. “Soon, baby. I promise. Now, let me know what you need help with.” Just as he says that, the timer goes off.

“Well, it’s done. You can set out the plates.”

“Let me take that out of the oven.” He stops me and slides me out of the way, grabbing the oven mitts and pulling out the tenderloin and roasted veggies. “Wow. This looks and smells amazing. Hell, I’m going to have to rethink this keeping you out of the kitchen.” Damn. There is something sexy about a man with his sleeves rolled up over his forearms and helping in the kitchen.

“Baby, stop looking at me like that or dinner’s going to be really cold.”

“I’m sorry. You’re just so handsome.”

“Thanks, love.” I spin around and grab glasses for our drinks to hide my flushed face. My heart’s pounding with that endearment. I get ahold of myself, and we manage to make it through dinner.

“Thank you, Phoebe. The food was amazing.”

“You’re welcome. Let me clean up.”

“I’ll help.” He takes the plates, emptying the excess, and sticks them in the sink. I rinse and set them in the dishwasher.

Once I press the start button, I clap my hands and say, “That’s the quickest cleanup I’ve ever had.”

“We make one hell of a team, my love.” He throws his arms around my waist and pulls me into his hold. One hand comes up to cup my face as he lowers his head. The sound of his phone going off disrupts our moment. With a sigh, he begrudgingly pulls away and answers it.

“Excuse me. I have to take this.” He kisses my temple and leaves the kitchen. I whip out my tablet from the drawer and delve into another romance book.

“What are you reading?” he asks, catching me off guard.

I set the tablet face down on the island. “Just a random book,” I stammer.

He tosses me a grin, stealing the tablet from the counter. “Is it about a pussy-eating kidnapper who satisfies his captive until she agrees to spend her life with him?”

“Why would she have to when he’s already got her locked up?” I challenge, aching to get my ass spanked.

He closes the distance and lifts me up onto the counter. His hand caresses my face, bringing my eyes up to his. “Because he craves more…so much more.”

“Well, this book doesn’t have it, but there’s another book with that theme,” I suggest, smirking and arching my brow, my expression full of intent.
