“Fuck, Mills,” he groaned when the orgasm crashed through me, making my walls spasm around him over and over while I cried mindlessly into the bed, letting it absorb my moans as he fucked me through it, then slammed deep, his whole body jerking as he came.

At some point, his body fell down on the mattress beside mine, both of us too overwhelmed, too busy trying to catch our breaths, to even reach for each other for a long time.

He recovered first, reaching for me, and hauling my suddenly boneless body up onto his strong chest.

His arm anchored around my hips as the other sifted through the strands of my hair as I listened as his heartbeat, frantic at first, slowed to a normal pace.

“The wait might have been torturous,” I said finally. “But that wouldn’t have been as fun with my ribs hurting.”

In fact, they were actually aching me more than they’d been in days right now. But I wasn’t going to fess up to that. Not if it meant he was going to go gentle on me the next time. Or, worse yet, wouldn’t fuck me again until he thought I was fully recovered.

Because now that I had that, there was no going back.

“Surprised Storm didn’t come rushing up here with that racket you were making,” he teased, shooting me a grin when I looked up to squint my eyes at him. Taking me with him, he leaned up to look down from the loft. “Dead asleep.”

“What a guard dog he’s turned out to be,” I said, tracing my fingers over Silvano’s skin.

“He knows you’re safe with me,” Silvano said, shrugging.

“Yeah,” I agreed. And I had to admit, I’d never felt safer than when I was around him. Maybe it was the whole ‘he’s a part of the mafia’ thing, but I thought it was more than that.

He was just… protective. And aware.

I mean when we’d been walking one day, some nasty fight broke out behind us, and he whipped around before I could even register what was happening, tucking me behind him, ready to take on whatever it was.

“Your legs working yet?” he asked after a couple of minutes.

“Maybe. Depends on what you have in mind,” I told him, getting a little chuckle out of him.

“Breakfast.”

“In that case,” I said, sitting up, and making a whole show of moving over him to get off the bed, straddling him for a second as his greedy gaze moved over me, then getting up, not bothering to find my clothes again, just starting down the stairs bare-ass naked.

I heard the bed squeak as he shifted, and when I got to the bottom to look back, he was sitting off the edge, watching me with that intensity that had my belly wobbling.

After I dressed, and met him at the door, feeling his hand press into my lower back, and keeping it there as we moved down the hall, I decided that I could happily have this, with him, forever.

I just didn’t know at the time how short ‘forever’ would turn out to be.

CHAPTER TWELVE

Silvano

Stupid fucking meeting.

I’d never been so resentful about being included as I was when I got myself dressed, and had to leave a pantsless—because she’d shimmied out of them after breakfast, declaring even the elastic waist was ‘too tight’—Millie in my apartment all alone.

To be fair, I probably needed to take it easy with her. She would never admit it, but she’d been walking kind of stiff when we went to get breakfast, so clearly her ribs weren’t as healed as we’d thought. And I’d shown absolutely no consideration to that possibility when I was inside of her.

Even just the memory of the way she’d taken charge, had teased, had fucking sucked me like it was her damn job, had my cock stiffening as I started down the street toward Lorenzo’s brownstone.

Taking a cab, or making one of the associates pick me up, would have been faster. I just thought I needed the air. The exercise. The time to clear my mind of her, so I could focus on whatever was going on with the Family.

Honestly, I’d been checked out since Millie came to stay with me. More so since the run-in with Lorenzo and Giana. Since I’d been ducking my ma and her dinners. And giving clipped responses to invasive texts and calls.

I had to admit it wasn’t just because of how much I was keeping from the Family about the situation. It was more that I wanted to, I don’t know, protect what was growing between us. I knew that once the whole family got involved, it was going to feel less like something that was just our own. And with things really just starting to heat up, I didn’t want to invite that in.

I was kind of glad the meeting was for capos and other important members of the Family as a whole, knowing the women would never give me a break if they were there.
