When I met Abby, I was a lifeless shell of a man—a widower who had himself convinced there was no chance for happiness after loss. I’m here to tell you that while life is never the same after you lose someone you love, there is hope. You’ll never get the same life back, but if you’re blessed with the right person, you can reinvent yourself. And I was so very lucky to have been granted a second chance at happiness.

But enough about me. Let’s get back to the subject of this book and the beautiful soul who wrote it. This is the story of how she became my surrogate, how I nearly flubbed it all up, and how despite that, it turned into an unexpected love story—not just about Abby’s and my love for each other, but the unconditional love she’s given to our son, while also respecting the memory of his biological mother.

We decided Alex should know the truth as soon as he could understand. Abby bought him a book called My Mommy is An Angel for his first Christmas. And these past few years, we’ve explained as best we could in simple terms how he came to be. He tells everyone he has two mums, one here on Earth and one in heaven. He looks for his angel mum in rainbows and sleeps with his favorite toy, a cuddly giraffe he knows is made from her pajamas. He’s handled it all so well, and I’m very proud of him. So proud of Abby, too, that she’s unselfishly made space for my son to appreciate and be proud of how he came to be.

I hope you read this book with an open heart, offering me grace for having made several mistakes along the way.

Writing our story was not only cathartic for my wife but helped her discover a passion for writing I hope she’ll continue. I’ll be here cheering her on, every step of the way. Writing is her passion. I’d been searching for my passion until I met her. Now, she’s my passion. Our family is my passion. Being a father is my passion.

Abby, my love, congratulations on the completion of this book. I’m so very grateful to be a part of this story—not only because you brought me our son, but because he brought me you.

Your love,

Sigmund
