“Nah, I mean. Not yet, anyway.”

Hmm. Maybe his dad is prospecting, or just hanging around a club. Finding clubs to just hang around and get close to until they get invited to join in.

“So you’re not from around here?”

His smile widens, his pearly white teeth making him look even more handsome than before. I’m a sucker for a man with a sexy smile.

“You’re a little Devil,” he announces rather than asks.

“Blood and all,” I huff, my reputation proceeds me as usual. It’s all I’ve ever been known as.

The Princess of the Devil’s Dust.

It’s why my brother and father are so protective, Mom says, it’s annoying.

I’m leverage, or an object to anyone outside our family circle. It’s a fucking curse if you ask me.

Driving up the steep hill, the headlights slip across a dozen vehicles with foggy windows already parked.

Thane parks the truck more to the left of the cliff leaving the radio on, a country song plays Luke Bryan’s “Drunk On You”. I’ve heard it a couple times at the club, so I know all the words and sing along to it. The moon shines through the windshield, spilling right onto our laps, helping set the evening.

He turns in his seat just enough to where his back is almost facing the driver’s door, and he’s looking at me. His sharp cheekbones tapering into a chiseled jaw. He’s fucking perfect in every way it seems. It makes it hard for me to be confident about my own body.

My foot begins to nervously tap on the floorboard, I tuck a hair behind my ear. “How about that drink?” I remind him, hoping to buy some time and get a grip on myself.

I don’t know why I’m acting like this, Piper would laugh in my face if I told her how much my hands were trembling right now. But Piper’s never seen Thane. He’s not like the guys at school, there’s something about him that just makes me throw reason to the wind and be by his side.

“Oh yeah, let me grab us some.” He opens the door and walks to the bed of his truck. Cricking my neck to the side, I watch him pull the lid off a blue cooler and grab two dark bottles, putting the lid back on, he climbs back in the truck. Taking it from him, I turn it in my hand until I find the label that reads Michelob Ultra, icy water slips over my fingers from the melted ice that was in the cooler. Huh, this is my favorite beer, I steal it from the club bar all the time. Twisting the top off, I take a less than ladylike sip. My mouth filling with cold, bubbly suds before I swallow.

“So are you from here?” I ask again, trying to make conversation.

“No, head out tomorrow, I think,” he replies curtly, obviously not wanting to talk about himself. Looks like whatever happens tonight ends here. I guess that’s good though. That means if this goes bad, nobody else will know about it. Bending his knee to rest on the seat, he turns his whole body and gives me a once-over. His eyes smoldering and that smirk sexy as hell. I take another sip of my beer, trying to reel my nerves in. He reaches out to tuck some hair behind my ear, and I freeze.

The touch sends a wave of warmth down my neck, and I can’t help noticing how good it feels to be touched. Nervously, I look up at him and his arctic blue eyes await my reaction. Opening my mouth to tell him I want to do this but I’m scared, I decide against it and shut it.

As if he can read my body language, he takes the lead and grips my chin, his thumb pressing my lips apart. He’s going to kiss me. I know it, he has that look in his eyes.

Closing the space between us, he dips downward and presses his lips to mine. Oh my god, yes! I close my eyes and breathe him in through my nose. His lips are smaller than my own, not quite fitting. But I don’t care, I want more. I want to feel his body against mine, I want to taste him, to break all the rules any girl should enviably have tattooed on her soul on a first date. The bottle of booze slips from my hand, spilling onto the floorboard, and I palm both sides of his face. Little bits of stubble scratching my hands.

Feverishly he grabs me by the hips and quickly jerks me underneath him, the gentleman letting me take my time gone and the manly beast that thrives inside of him out to play now. Using one of his knees that are pressed into the seat, he gently moves it between my own legs and pushes my thighs apart.
