Devyn shook her head.

“Come share that food with me. We don’t have to talk about anything until after you’ve eaten. Try to relax for a little bit, okay?”

She breathed a sigh of relief.

I plated the ribs and rice and popped open a bottle of wine.

Devyn held her palm out. “No wine for me.”

“Are you sure?”

She nodded. “Yes.”

“Want water?”

“That would be great.”

Devyn certainly looked like she could use a glass of wine to relax. I knew I needed one right now. I poured myself some red and mostly watched her eat, taking a few bites of my food here and there.

“Thank you for this,” she finally said. “You were right. I did need food and to calm down.” She took a deep breath, still seeming on edge, but not as bad as before. She got up off the stool. “Can we go over to the couch?”

“Of course,” I said, following her to the living room.

As we sat across from each other on my sofa, Devyn locked her hands together. Despite that, they were still shaking.

“Owen, you take such good care of me. You’re the most amazing man. And you’ve been right to wonder what the hell has been wrong with me for the past week.” She swallowed. “Something is very wrong. But it has nothing to do with how I feel about you or how amazing that afternoon we spent together in my apartment was.”

Adrenaline coursed through me. “Does it have to do with him?”

She shook her head and started to cry.

What the fuck is happening? My stomach was in knots. “Did something happen with Vera…the kids?”

She shook her head again.

I moved over to her side of the couch and placed my hands on her shoulders. “Look at me, Devyn. Whatever it is, it’s going to be okay. I just need you to tell me so I can help.”

“I wasn’t sick,” she blurted. “But I did go to a medical appointment.”

I gulped, the anticipation nearly killing me. “Okay…”

After a period of silence that felt endless, she hit me with it.

“I’m pregnant, Owen. The doctor confirmed it.”

It took a few seconds to register.

She’s pregnant?

And then the room started to spin.

“You’re pregnant?”

She nodded.

Rubbing my palms on my thighs, I started to sweat, unable to find words. “This is… I don’t even…”

“I know.” She nodded rapidly. “I know it’s a shock.”

“You’re sure?”

“Yes. I took many home tests, and like I said, the doctor confirmed.”

I took her hand. “You were afraid to tell me because you thought it would upset me?”

“I wasn’t sure how you’d feel. And I didn’t know how to tell you. It’s such a shock.”

Trying to make sense of this, I just kept blinking. “How far along?”

“The doctor put it down as eight-and-a-half weeks. They go by the day of your last period. Which means conception is approximately two weeks earlier.”

I tilted my head. “So it happened that night in the hotel? Our first night?” I rubbed my temples, wracking my brain to remember whether I’d used a condom both times that night. I was sure I had. But it didn’t matter. It obviously happened anyway.

I knelt in front of her and laid my head on her belly. “I know you probably felt like this would be difficult news for me, but honestly, Devyn…it’s not.” I looked up into her eyes. “I’m not ready for this, and I’m sure you’re not either, but…if an accident was gonna happen, I’m so happy it happened with you.” I whispered, “Only you.”

I stared up at the ceiling, overcome with emotion as the magnitude of this started to set in. “Wow.” Not only was having a kid something I wasn’t expecting now, it was something I’d doubted would ever happen for me.

“Owen…” She interrupted my thoughts.

I looked back at her, and she was crying again. An urgency grew inside of me. I needed to prove I was okay with this, that everything was going to be okay.

Still on my knees and grabbing both of her hands in mine, I started rambling. “I’ve fallen for you so hard. I’m not saying that because of what you just told me. I want you in my life. I want this baby. You’re not gonna have to go through this alone. We can do this, Devyn. I’ll do whatever it takes to make it work. Get you whatever you need and learn everything there is to learn about being a father. I’ll buy every book, and heck, I’ll even babysit for Holden and Colby. I—”

“Owen…” She shouted louder this time.

My heart nearly stopped when it finally hit me.

Six-and-a-half weeks?

I did the math as fast as my brain could possibly compute.

We’d met on April 15th—that was…five-and-a-half weeks ago.

Right? Or was it six-and-a-half weeks now?

Fuck.

My stomach dropped.

I needed reassurance.

My eyes found hers again. “It’s mine, right?”

A teardrop fell down her cheek, followed by words that gutted me.
