“Actor?” His eyes went wide. “Which actor?”

“I don’t want to say, because he’s pretty damn famous and you’ll know who he is. I don’t feel like dealing with your ridicule. Plus, she wouldn’t want me telling you her business.”

“Well, that’s no fun. I’m gonna get it out of you.” He chuckled. “Anyway, if she’s dicking around with Tom Cruise, why even bother with her?”

“I didn’t say she was still fooling around with the guy. But he’s been in her life for a while. He definitely still messes with her head, and I can’t think of any other reason she’d do a one-eighty after we had a great day together.” I put my head in my hands as I leaned my elbows against the kitchen counter.

“You’re really fucked up over her. This isn’t like you.”

With no way to refute that, I reached for my beer. “I think I might be falling for her.”

Brayden lifted his phone out and voice texted someone. “Dude, I can’t handle this alone. Get down here. Owen thinks he’s in love.”

“What the hell are you doing?” I spewed.

He looked at the screen. “Holden’s coming down.”

“Is that really necessary?”

Brayden tucked his phone in his pocket. “This is a big deal.”

No less than three minutes later, Holden barged in. “What’s this now? Owen’s in love with Devyn?”

I rolled my eyes. “You didn’t need to come over just because this idiot couldn’t keep things to himself.”

Brayden crossed his arms. “The last time I checked, you’ve never been in love. This is pretty damn important, if you ask me.”

I raised my voice. “I didn’t say I was in love. I said I was falling for her.”

“Falling in love, yeah.” Brayden grinned. “We need to strategize and take out Chris Hemsworth before he ruins everything.”

Holden looked understandably confused. “Chris Hemsworth?”

“It’s not Chris Hemsworth.” I shot daggers at Brayden. “He’s married anyway.”

“How do you know that?” Brayden laughed. “I thought you were too busy to keep up on entertainment news.”

A few seconds later, the door opened and Colby entered.

“Are you freaking kidding me?” I groaned.

“What’s going on?” Colby snickered. “Holden texted me that we have a love emergency.”

I shook my head. “There’s no emergency.”

“We need to assess whether this is legit, and if not, knock some sense into you, Owen,” Brayden said. “And if it is legit, we need to bust your balls anyway.”

“My first question is…how do you know it’s not infatuation?” Holden asked.

“I don’t have an answer for you except to say it feels different. I know I’ve never been in love. And my feelings for Devyn are stronger than anything I’ve felt before. But it’s too soon to call it love.”

“Would you jump in front of a train to save her?” Colby asked.

I stopped for a second to ponder that.

Shit.

I would.

I nodded. “Yeah.”

“I’m sorry to tell you, but you’re in love,” Colby said matter-of-factly.

Brayden nudged Colby. “She’s dating Leonardo DiCaprio.”

I glared at him. “Will you stop with that shit?”

Brayden shrugged. “You said I might know who the actor is. Since you won’t tell me, the only way I’m gonna figure it out is through your reactions and process of elimination.”

Colby raised a brow. “Actor? What’s this all about?”

“Don’t ask, please. Just someone she was seeing before she came out here. I’m not saying anything else about it.”

“Okay…” Colby crossed his arms. “Well, are you going to tell her how you feel?”

“She knows how I feel, although I don’t think she realizes how strong my feelings are. Anyway, now is not the right time to express anything more. She’s been avoiding me for almost a week, and I have to figure out what’s wrong before I do anything else to fuck it up.”

“You think you did something to upset her?” Holden asked.

“It was his dick. It makes her disappear,” Brayden cracked.

Holden lit up. “Wait… You had sex again?”

I reluctantly nodded.

Colby rubbed his chin. “Seriously, you think it had something to do with that?”

“I’m wondering if she’s having regrets after it sank in.” I stared into my beer bottle. “This last time was much different than the first. Everything felt more…serious. Might have been too much for her right now.” I exhaled. “Because of her past, Devyn doesn’t let people in very easily. I think she might’ve had second thoughts about taking things that far with me, given everything she has going on.”

“She hasn’t said anything specific to make you believe that, though?” Holden asked.

“She hasn’t said shit. This is just my theory. As of right now, she claims she’s not feeling well, but I have a strong feeling that’s just an excuse. The last thing I want to do is force anything, so I won’t be going over there. It just sucks…because I really care about her. But I don’t think she’s ready for anything with me.”

“Either way, you need to be up front and tell her how you feel,” Colby said.
