People would think she was being 'punished' for the times she had acted inappropriately in the presence of their CEO, when in fact...
I'll see you home, she remembered Rowland murmur earlier, and her heart grew giddy as she now understood what those words truly meant.
Chapter Thirteen
WHAT THE HELL AM I doing?
It was a question Rowland had been asking himself while waiting for Emerald to arrive. He had taken the chopper just to make sure he would get to his ranch in Evergreen before she did, and he had rounded up the staff to make two things clear: his wife was to be treated with the utmost respect...while her identity was to remain a secret at all costs.
His chest tightened when he saw the company car finally pulling up the driveway. Rowland knew he still had a few moments left to change his mind, but as soon as the car rolled to a stop, he was already moving forward, his heart beating inordinately fast.
Her gaze collided with his as soon as he opened the door for her, and the way his wife's emerald-green eyes were shining had him biting back a groan.
I'm fucked.
All she had to do was keep looking at him with those shining green eyes of hers, and she would always have him in the palm of her hand.
A giddy smile curved over her lips as he helped her out of the backseat, and since it was still so damn rare for his wife to gift him with one of her smiles, the sight had Rowland hauling her into his arms.
Emmy could only gasp as she tumbled against her husband's powerful form, but the thought of resisting him no longer crossed her mind as she watched his head lower.
Her arms curled around his neck as soon as his lips covered hers, and her body melted against his the moment his tongue thrust inside of her mouth.
Aaaaah.
Rowland swept her up in his arms without breaking the kiss, and when he finally lifted his head and started walking, it was only then that Emmy saw how he seemed to have his entire staff lined up on each side of the driveway, and they were all clapping and cheering.
Oh my goodness.
Emmy felt like she was living a dream as her husband set her down on her feet by the entrance doors and introduced her to his employees as his bride.
The pride in his voice was unmistakable, but it was the look in Rowland's eyes that stole her breath. The only change of clothes she had in her locker was her ancient high school sweater and an equally old pair of denim jumpers, but oh, the way this man was looking at her...
It was always how he had looked at her, Emmy realized.
And it was the kind of look that made her feel as if she was the most desirable woman on earth.
Rowland could not keep himself from staring at his wife. His employees were coming up to her one by one to offer their good wishes, and the smile on her lips as she thanked them was so damn dazzling it had his cock wanting her for its dinner and dessert...and maybe as its midnight snack as well.
Control yourself, Asherfield!
He owed it to his wife to give her a proper welcome, and so he waited until everyone had a chance to speak to Emerald before reclaiming his wife.
"Everyone's so nice," Emmy whispered.
"That's probably because you're just as nice," her husband answered without a missing beat, and all she could do was laugh since he had whispered the words back as well. Rowland Asherfield was already devastatingly attractive without doing anything, but when her husband was being playful as well?
I'm sorry for being selfish, God, but I don't think I want any other girl to see this side of his.
Rowland saw his wife bite her lip and mistakenly assumed that she was too shy to tell him she was starting to feel hungry. "Should we have a tour of the house after dinner?"
"Um..."
Her gaze darted to the side of the house, and his lips twitched. "How about a quick look at the stable?"
Emerald's entire face lit up, and her reaction had his staff struggling to contain their grins. Just like that, she had already won them over without even trying, and it was no different with how Rowland had also found himself ensnared by her mere existence.
The moment he had laid his eyes on Emerald, that was it for him.
He was hers.
Completely.
For now.
Chapter Fourteen
EMMY COULD HARDLY CONTAIN her joy as her husband's manager showed her around. Rowland's stable here in Evergreen might be a lot smaller than what he had in San Antonio, but in all other aspects, it lacked for nothing. All of the facilities and equipment used were state of the art, and the biggest and best surprise of all was when her husband told Emmy about having a wedding gift waiting for her at one of the stalls at the back.
