Like an embarrassed teenage boy who got caught jacking off, I dragged myself off to my bathroom and cleaned myself up. I slid on a pair of boxers, then tossed on my black sweatpants, and walked out of my bedroom. I knocked gently on Avery’s bedroom door.

“Avery?”

“Sorry!” she blurted out, not opening the door.

I snickered, imagining how flushed she’d probably felt from walking in on me. “No, I’m sorry. I just…” Was thinking about you, and I got hard, and then came hard, too. I cleared my throat. “I was clearing my mind.”

“It looked completely cleared, too,” she mentioned, still not opening the door. “I just thought I heard you saying my name and came in. Sorry. I should’ve knocked.”

“It’s no big deal.”

“Oh. It was a big, big deal,” she said, emphasizing the word big.

That did a good amount for an ego boost. I was almost certain I’d get off on that statement the next time my hand slid down my pants.

“Can I come in?” I asked.

“I would rather you didn’t.”

“Why not? We’re both adults. We’ve both seen the opposite sex parts before.”

She swung the door open and shook her head. “Yes, we have seen them before, but I’ve never seen yours before, and you’re my roommate, which makes it weird. I don’t want it to be weird between us. But now I can’t stop thinking about what I saw, and well, I saw a lot,” she said, her face flushed. “A lot, a lot.”

I bit my bottom lip and smirked. “Hell yeah, you did.”

She rolled her eyes and shoved me. “Don’t get cocky, Nathan.”

“I can’t help it. As you saw, cocky is my default.”

“I don’t want to speak to you about this anymore,” she said as bashfulness hit her straight in the face. “So good night, Nathan.”

“Night, Coach.”

I headed back to my bedroom after she slammed her door in my face. A few minutes later, my phone dinged.

Avery

I have a question.

Nathan

Are you texting me from the next room?

Avery

Yes, I am.

Nathan

Want me to come back over to talk?

Avery

No. I can’t say what I need to say to you with a straight face.

Nathan

It’s all right. I like your crooked smile.

Avery

I don’t have a crooked smile!

I laughed because she had a crooked smile. I loved that damn crooked smile.

Nathan

What’s up, Avery?

Avery

Were you envisioning me as you were…you know…?

Nathan

There’s a high possibility that I was, yes.

Avery

Oh.

A few seconds passed before another text came through.

Avery

How was I? In your mind, I mean.

Nathan

Fucking fantastic. Better each time.

Avery

This has happened more than once?

Nathan

If I told you how many times it has happened, you’d probably think I’d need rehab.

Avery

That’s too much info, Nathan.

Nathan

You asked, Coach. I’m just being honest.

Avery

Too honest.

Nathan

Do you think of me, too? When you touch yourself?

Avery

We aren’t talking about me.

I smirked and sat up in bed.

Oh shit.

She thought of me when she got herself off.

This was a new development to the story of us.

Nathan

Can I come to your room?

Avery

Absolutely not.

Nathan

Are you blushing right now?

Avery

Absolutely not.

Nathan

Is your hand between your thighs?

Avery

Absolutely not.

Nathan

Can you slowly slide your hand between your thighs for me?

Avery

Nathaniel. Stop it.

I knew well enough to know that Nathaniel wasn’t said from a place of hatred anymore. It was said in the same way she used to say it when we were younger. Playfully. Man, I missed her saying my full name in a playful way. I missed being playful with her. I missed her.

It blew my mind how someone could be so close and still you could miss them so damn much.

Avery

I keep thinking about it, though…

Nathan

About you touching yourself?

Avery

No. About kissing you.

It turned out I wasn’t alone in my wicked thoughts as of late.

Avery

So I’ve been thinking…

Nathan

Go on.

Avery

Maybe we can be friends with…benefits.

Nathan

You’re making a lot of sense right now.

Avery

Only kissing benefits.

Nathan

If you’re in love with me, Avery Kingsley, just say it. Don’t be shy.

Avery

Shut up before I change my mind.

Nathan

Can I kiss both sets of lips?

I heard her snicker from the other room. My favorite fucking sound.

Avery

Only the ones on my face.

Nathan

You’re killing me here, but I agree to these terms.

I stood from my bed and walked back into the hallway, then I knocked on her door.

There was a moment of hesitation before I heard her footsteps growing closer to the door. Still, she didn’t open it. “What are you doing? We’re supposed to be texting,” she whispered, as if she were nervous for all the ghosts of the house to hear us.

“Open the door, Avery.”

“What? No. I’m not going to.”

“Why not?”

“Because there’s no reason for me to open it up right now.”

“Yes, there is,” I argued.

“And what reason is that?” she asked.

“I have to kiss you good night.”

There was a moment of pause from her. The door slowly creaked open, and she appeared. She combed her hair behind her ears as she stood there in her pajamas, looking as perfect as she always did.
