Maybe he could be the exception.
The hot night of passion I needed.
He rolled his tongue across his bottom lip, eyes fixed on me. My heart hammered in my chest, ready to make an escape. Even my ex-husband never looked at me this way. The blond hottie sat on a couch with two other muscular men. They were the only men not wearing suits, looking comfortable in jeans and tight T-shirts.
When Savanna handed me a cosmopolitan, I snapped my head away from him. My skin still burned from his sinful looks. Even my breathing was erratic. How could a complete stranger have this effect on me?
“You okay?” Savanna cocked an eyebrow at me and sipped from her glass. “You look a little… flustered.”
“Do you see the blond Adonis to my right?”
A smile turned up the corners of her mouth. “Hell, yeah. Now that’s what I’m talking about, Clarke. You need a hottie like him to make your troubles go away.”
“I’m not troubled.”
“No, but I bet he would make you forget about Sean.”
“Yeah,” I muttered. “Maybe.”
As if he sensed us talking about him, the sexy blond appeared at my side with a bottle of Heineken in his hand. He gave me a boyish smile that was so damn cute I wanted to kiss him.
Get a grip, woman.
“I was about to leave,” he said, his mouth inches from mine, invading my personal space. “But then you showed up. Must be fate.”
I laughed, because I no longer believed in destiny or soul mates, or any of that shit. But if fate wanted me to get down and dirty with him, I was okay with testing that theory.
“Lucky for you,” I quipped.
Savanna elbowed him as she sipped from her glass. “My friend is celebrating her divorce.”
His eyebrows rose. “Yeah? You look too young to get married.”
“I’m not married anymore.”
His face illuminated. “How fortunate for me?”
“Very,” I said without hesitation. “This is your lucky night.”
What the hell am I doing?
I had never been this forward with a man. But when was the last time I was single? My sophomore year of high school, when the star basketball player swept the editor of the school newspaper off her feet. We were nothing alike, the cliche jock and nerd. And by the look of the man standing before me, he was more like my ex-husband than I would have liked. But athletes had a lot of stamina, so…
Cheers to my first one-night stand.
He slid his hand to my waist and pulled me closer. “I’m Will.”
“I’m Clarke.”
“Unusual name for a girl.”
“Well, my father is an unusual man.”
My dad was a famous journalist who named me after a male politician from his hometown.
Two men moved toward Will, both tall with dark hair and delicious smirks. All three of them were tempting. I assumed hot guys traveled in packs because… Wow! Both men looked at Savanna like they wanted to throw her against the bar and have their way with her. Of course, she seemed delighted by that promise.
Savanna glowed as she introduced herself to the men.
Will cupped the tallest man’s shoulder. “This is Ethan, my teammate and oldest friend on this planet.” He tipped his head at the other dark-haired man. “And that’s Liam.”
Savanna’s jaw dropped. “Wait… I know you guys.”
Oh, no. Please don’t ruin this for me.
“You’re all on the Flyers. I covered your game against the Rangers last night.”
The air drained from my chest with her confession. Because of my father, I avoided anyone high-profile. My childhood was difficult. That was probably why I married my high school boyfriend before we graduated from college, even though I had my doubts about him.
The smile slipped from my lips as I looked at Will. He would have been the perfect escape.
As Savanna chatted with Ethan and Liam, Will grabbed my arm and led me away from the group. “Why do you look like I just killed your dog?”
“You wouldn’t get it.”
He smirked. “Try me.”
I released a groan. “Since we’ll never see each other again, okay. Why not? Until a few seconds ago, I was thinking about how good you’d look on top of me.”
“I like the sound of this.” A wicked smile stretched the corners of his mouth. “So what’s changed?”
“I didn’t know you were…”
“A hockey player?”
I shook my head. “Famous.”
“How about a do-over?” He extended his hand to me. “I’m Will. Not famous. Just Will.”
I slipped my fingers between his. “Clarke. But this changes nothing.”
His hand slid through my hair and to the back of my head. “Then I guess I need to make you come hard enough to forget.”
Even in the hot club, my body chilled from his words. A shiver shot straight down my arms, stirring wicked feelings inside me.
I pulled away to stare into his pretty blue eyes. He was so gorgeous my throat just about closed up.
