“Maxim promised he’d get answers for you,” Wynter reminded him, beginning to peel off her bloodstained clothes. “Something tells me he can be seriously scary when the situation calls for it.”

She wasn’t mistaken.

“Leave it to him, shower with me.”

Exhaling heavily, Cain joined her in stripping off clothing. Once done, they both stepped into the shower stall. A happy sigh slipped out of her as the hot spray drummed at their skin.

Cain carefully shampooed her matted hair, washing away the blood and tiny bits of gore he’d missed. She leaned against him, her arms curled around his waist. The moment probably shouldn’t have felt so normal, so mundane, but it wasn’t exactly unusual for his consort to be in such a state.

If someone had told him a year ago that one little being would be so essential to him, he’d never have believed it. He never would have imagined that he’d go through absolutely any lengths to keep a woman by his side. Never would have believed that a woman would ever proclaim to love him.

And yet, here was this witch who’d burrowed her way into his soul, who belonged to him in a way that nothing else had, who it would break something inside him to lose. Which was why so many questions pricked at him daily and rubbed at his nerves until they felt raw . . .

What “goal” did Kali have?

What had the deity forbidden his witch from telling him?

Was it Abaddon who kept calling Wynter to Cain’s garden?

If it was Abaddon, why would he reach out to her?

And now that Abel was dead, there was an additional question that would prod at Cain: Just how would Adam choose to retaliate?

Cain wouldn’t chew on any of that tonight, though. He was going to simply enjoy this moment of peace with his consort.

It took two more rounds of shampooing to completely clean her hair. As she applied the conditioner, he began to slide his soap-slicked hands over her body, not needing to be careful of any open wounds. Her injuries were already healed—both thanks to the perks of immortality and to Anabel’s healing potion.

They lightly kissed and stroked as they soaped each other down until no more red mingled with the water that hit the base of the shower. She gasped each time he palmed her breasts, tweaked her nipples, or licked droplets of water from her skin.

After they’d rinsed off, he slid his hand down her body and said, “Ah, I forgot to check if you’re clean here.” He dipped a finger inside her pussy, finding it hot and wet. “Hmm, not quite. You’re all slick.” He tutted.

“That’s your fault, you made the mess, so you should be the one to clean it.”

He smiled. “Lucky for you, it’s something I enjoy doing.”

“I don’t know why you’re being so difficult.”

Watching his consort slip off the bed the next morning, Cain lifted a brow. “How am I being difficult?”

“You’re gonna play stupid now? Really?” She shook her head in annoyance, but affection warmed her eyes.

“I’m not asking for anything unreasonable.”

“No, you’re not—which makes a nice change.”

He ignored that jab. “You’re not working today. There’s no reason you can’t spend it with me.” Having an entire day together wasn’t something they were able to enjoy often, since they were both very busy people.

She grabbed her duffel from the floor near the table. “As I’ve already stated, I’m fine with spending the day with you. I’d like to. But we need to put a pin in the plan until I’ve checked on my coven.”

“That will involve you getting dressed.” He slid to the edge of the mattress and planted his feet on the floor. “The plan is for us both to stay naked the whole day, remember? You agreed to it last night.”

“Because you wouldn’t let me come until I did.”

“How is that relevant?”

She let out a snort, her mouth twitching. “I won’t be gone long. An hour, if that.”

“An hour is long.” He fisted the shirt she wore and pulled her so close she stood between his spread thighs.

“You’re such a baby when you’re not getting your way.”

Humming, he pressed a kiss to the strip of skin between her breasts while taking the duffel from her hand and dumping it on the floor. “You’re my consort, you’re supposed to give me my way.”

“I’m your consort, yes, but I’m also a Priestess. I have responsibilities. I have a coven, and I refuse to neglect them.”

“Not seeing them for one day wouldn’t count as neglect. They’re not children, Wynter. They’re fully grown adults. I’m quite certain they’ll be fine without your supervision for one day.” As she stared at him, her brow flicked up, he amended, “All right, I suspect they’ll be fine without your supervision.”

She let her fingers drift through his hair. “Once I’ve paid them a visit and ensured they’re all fine, I’ll come back here. We can stay naked for the rest of the day, and you can do whatever you want to me.”
