She jumped out of the truck before I could stop her. I thought she was running to her dad but she made a detour. I couldn’t believe my eyes. She walked right up to Brian and brought both her fists down on the top of his head. He dropped like a bag of potatoes. “Miss.” The cop grabbed for her.

“Hands off asshole.” Her dad got there first and pushed the cop back and it looked like everyone sprung into action. “Hold it, everybody stop where the fuck you are.” Mancini got off the phone. “Let me talk to you for a minute.”

He told the cop who looked like he was ready to pull his piece and start blasting away. The cop didn’t move and Mancini pulled his wallet opened it and shoved it in his face. “Walk away right fucking now.” The cop actually held up his hands and backed away.

Somebody must’ve called Brian’s family because his dad showed up in his old beat up truck and all hell broke loose. He came charging like the bully he is and Colton started towards him, but he wasn’t alone. There was a line of men at his back.

Like all bullies he blustered and pontificated but it was obvious that the wind had been knocked from his sails. Then his eyes fell on me. “You did this didn’t you, you little shit.” He took a step forward and I was ready to drop him, but once again Colt got there first and pushed him back with a hand on his chest.

“He’s the wrong one asshole.”

“This ain’t got nothing to do with you Lyon.”

“If it concerns him it concerns me, now walk the fuck over there and check on your boy.”

“Didn’t you already do enough to him? He spent days in the hospital already.”

“If he’d kept his ass away from my kid none of this would be happening.” We were so distracted by him that no one noticed Brian wasn’t moving. “What did you do to him? Get the ambulance you idiots; what’re you cops good for? Just standing around.”

“Did she kill ‘im?” Creed asked as we all looked at the cop that was trying to revive him. Caitie didn’t look too bothered. “No, but it’ll be a long time before he messes with anyone else again. Cerebral cortex.”

Her father high fived her and pulled her in for a hug. My champ wasn’t crying anymore. She looked like she was ready for blood.

“Go grab your bags kid, you’re coming home with us.” I didn’t argue with her dad. Not because I was afraid or anything, but I knew she’d sleep better if she knew I was there.

I still had to answer some questions or so I thought, but whatever Mancini had done had cleared the way. In the end it was the unconscious Brian who was facing charges for breaking into the house with a gun. The cop asked if I wanted to charge him with felony breaking and entering since he had a gun, and Mancini stepped in.

“Attempted murder…”

“But he’s the one who got hurt.”

“He broke in with a gun and took a shot, what? Does he get points for missing? We’ll start there and I’ll let you know what else I’m gonna throw at him; like stalking.” How the hell did he know that?

Well damn! I don’t even know where to start. The night has sure been an eye opener. I can still hear my daughter’s screams in my head. At first I thought someone had got past me and entered her room but once I understood what she was saying the four of us hit the door running.

I knew the kid could handle himself after what Mancini had said, and what I’d seen in the schoolyard that day, but against a gun, there’s never any guarantees. I didn’t know I was going to feel the same fear I would’ve felt had it been one of my kids though. And when we got there and saw that he had it under control my knees almost buckled.

Then that fool ran to get to my daughter when he has a perfectly good truck parked in the driveway and I knew that my wife had been right all along. The kid’s a fucking keeper. And then to top it all off my daughter…all the shit I’ve taught her over the years hasn’t been in vain.

I don’t teach my kids to fight like pussies, she knows to drop a motherfucker with a knee to the balls and when he’s on his way down, bring those fiery hands down on the top of his head. That fuck will be lucky if he’s not eating through a straw for the rest of his life. And I don’t give a fuck.

But what the fuck was that Mancini showed the cop back there? He’s got some splaining to do. We headed back to the house after the cops and the ambulance left, no doubt my father in law is going to be on my ass as soon as he gets the report in the morning, but whatever.
