“No months, weeks, we’re getting married in a few weeks. I want my ring on your finger and my kid in your womb before winter.”

“Donovan…”

I love the way her voice goes all soft and sweet when she’s being shy. It’s a complete turnaround from the hellion she becomes when I’m inside her. I love them both.

“What, why do you think I’m inside you every chance I get? I have no idea about women’s cycles and temperatures and all that other mumbo jumbo, but I figure if I take you everyday at least, one of those times will do the trick.

As much seed as I’ve planted in you, you should be carrying triplets by now.”

“Oh is that what you’ve been doing? I though you were just a horny old letch.”

“That too.” I pounced on her, pinning her to the bed. I’d barely been through the door after a long day at work before I’d dragged her off to my bed.

“Oh no you don’t, work first, then play. I think I might be getting close to something.”

“Oh alright, but you’re gonna owe me big time.” She gave me a kiss to tide me over before grabbing her computer and some files.

“Now I was going back through everything and something clicked. I don’t know how I missed it the first time, probably because I wasn’t expecting to see it here, but I worked on something like this last year.”

“You’ve lost me.”

“Here, in Riley’s files. He was working on this top-secret mission. There was a lot of noise about it last year and I was one of the only reporters to work on it.

We didn’t uncover much since the government closed all avenues and pulled the plug, but I always knew there was something there.

Rumor had it that our guys found something that was worth more than the earth up there. What that something is and how to get to it, was what we were trying to uncover.

That’s when the government moved in and shut everything down. In the end, I didn’t get close enough, but from the whispers and innuendo, I know there was some truth to it.

Now if someone wanted to get their hands on that kind of info, then they’d need someone on the inside.”

“If this thing is as big as you claim, I don’t see the government letting one man have access to all of the info. Wouldn’t it make more sense to have a number of people working on it at once, with each of them in the dark?”

“That’s what I think too, but what if with his clearance, Boyd Riley had access to the finished product?”

“Make sense, have we figured out where the money in the dummy account came from? And who’s been trying to access it?”

“No, whoever it is covered the transactions too well, it’ll take time and more resources than I have here, plus the fact that you want to keep this under the radar makes it more difficult. I could get more if you’ll just let me…”

“No fucking way, and don’t ask again.” My work phone rang and cut us off.

“Chase here.”

“Boy we’ve got another body, I don’t know what the fuck is going on around here, but I’m hoping it’s not an epidemic. I’m five years away from retirement, I don’t need this shit.”

“Cap, the body, who is it?” I took her hand and pulled her down at my side when she jolted at my words.

“That vagrant Clarence, why anyone would want to kill that fool is anyone’s guess.”

“How did he die?”

“Took one to the chest.” Another coincidence, I don’t think so. We don’t have murders on our little inlet and like the Cap said, who would want to off him?

“Have the team seal the place off until I get there, no one touches anything.” I hung up and got off the bed.

“I don’t know how long this is going to take baby, eat without me okay, and if I’m gonna be really late I’ll call you. You want me to call your mom or one of the boys to come stay with you?”

“No Donovan I’m fine. Who is it?” I took her head in my hands and studied her face. “I hate like fuck for this shit to touch you. It was Clarence.”

“What, but why? Do you think this has something to do with what we’re working on?”

“I don’t know but I think so, my gut talking again. Do me a favor, just concentrate on our wedding for the rest of the night. I’ll see you.” A long hard kiss and I was gone.

I didn’t have a good feeling about this. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but two homicides this close together in a town that hasn’t had one in over thirty years didn’t seem that normal to me, unless there was a connection.
