“It was Wyatt—Salt. He must have worked something out, hacked into the system somehow. The lawyer we’ve got a connection with showed up today, and he left me with this.” Roman reached into his pocket and took out the tiny packet of salt, completely meaningless to anyone that wasn’t in the Rainbow’s Seven.

Bang Bang’s eyes opened wide, his grin spreading. He clapped his big hands down on his thighs. “He did it. He fucking did it. I’m going to tip him like a world-star drag queen once we get out of here. All twenty-dollar bills.”

“He’d appreciate that,” Roman said, chuckling, allowing himself to finally feel a blooming sense of hope inside his chest. They weren’t out of the woods yet, not by a long shot, but the hope was there, and that was all Roman needed to keep pushing forward.

“You think they can get us out of here, then?”

“I do,” Roman said with a nod of his head. “Salt can solve any puzzle put in front of him, and he’s got the rest of the Rainbow’s Seven at his back. Mimic, Mustang, Phantom, and Doc are all top of the class. Together, I think they’d be able to break us out of Alcatraz.” Roman tilted his head, smiling. “Still doesn’t mean I’m not going to try to break us out from the inside.”

Bang Bang arched a bushy brow. “You got a plan?”

“I’ve got a few.”

“Which one you think is your best?”

Roman chuckled. “I can go through all of them. It’s not like we’ve got anywhere to be.”

“Speak for yourself, broki. I’m ready to get in that yard and get some sun on my skin again. I’m starting to look like your ass, all pale and sad.”

“My ass isn’t pale or sad.”

Bang Bang shrugged. “Hey, I’m not judging, and I’m not looking to make sure, either. I don’t want to get Salt angry with me.”

“He can verify that I don’t have a pale or sad ass. I mean, it might be a little white, but that’s not a bad thing. I haven’t exactly had the time to take off my Speedo and sunbathe naked. Maybe once we get out of here.” Roman pursed his lips, only slightly annoyed at having his (admittedly pale) ass called out. But the annoyance was minuscule compared to the joy he felt at being ribbed by his best friend again. It was a sliver of normality in this sea of chaos they were currently drifting on. He appreciated the spark of laughter that lit between them, devolving into full-on belly laughs. Their laughter contrasted with the rest of the hair-raising sounds that echoed through the prison.

It made him feel like, for once, things were going to be okay. They were going to make it out of this, and once they were out, they’d go after the tome and make Leonidas pay for the shit he put them through.

Roman had the focus of a shark when there was blood in the water.

He was ready to eat.

Chapter 4

Wyatt Hernandez

Wyatt looked around at the gathered crew, anxious faces staring back. Mimic and Mustang sat on the couch, Mustang’s feet up and her head resting on Mimic’s shoulder. She wore the same pair of sweatpants Mimic had on and a spaghetti-strap tank, putting her black mamba forearm tattoo on full display. Doc sat on the chair at the table, drinking a steaming cup of tea with Phantom, the lavender and herbs wafting in Wyatt’s direction and giving him a secondhand sense of calm. He had to ask her if she could make another cup for him after this meeting was over. Maybe that would help him finally get a full night’s rest for once.

Wyatt stood in front of the blue whale mural. He felt a wave of nerves hit him but pushed it away, ready to deal with what was in front of him instead of the anxieties inside of him.

“Mustang, I think we should start tonight with you. Mimic said you had something to tell us?”

Mustang nodded, sitting up, feet still tucked underneath her. “My contact in the Pride has been relatively chatty. He says Leonidas is desperate for the two missing pages now that he has the tome. He told me that it’s not being held in any of the usual locations, either. Apparently, Leonidas is being extra careful with it.”

“And he’s got zero idea on where it could be?”

“None,” Mustang said. She fixed the red-and-white bandana that was wrapped around her forehead, a wave of her brown curls escaping from underneath it. “He’s gone quiet, too. I haven’t been able to contact him for the last three days.”

“That’s unusual?” Wyatt asked, unsure of what was and wasn’t normal in situations like these.

“It is. He always answers within the day.”

“Alright, well, keep trying, I guess. We need to find out where he’s keeping the Tome, because once we get Roman and Bang Bang out, we’re going for our money.”
