In the last year and a half, I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been since the day I held my son minutes after his birth.

Out of respect for my new family, I try not to dwell on my past, but my very understanding wife has made my son a part of our lives.

She remembered his birthday, she has a picture of him in his baby sister’s room, and every weekend we go to the cemetery to leave him a new stuff animal that she found while out shopping for the baby, or some other little thing that would bring joy to a little boy.

She helped me get over most of the grief, though it will never be completely gone. I refuse though, after the first time she dragged me there, to visit my first wife’s resting place. It had taken me falling in love with Thalia to put away the hurt of betrayal, to trust again.

She was nothing like Cynthia, and I’ve spent everyday since the day I first told her that I love her, trying to make up for our rocky start. When I think about that contract now, I’m almost ashamed. Not so much about the contract, but some of the things I’d asked of her. I’d made her pay for someone else’s fuck-ups.

Even when it killed me to leave her, to be away from her, I’d forced myself to keep her at arm’s length. In my stupidity, my quest not to give too much of myself, I’d almost lost her and my child, my beautiful little Cristabella.

She was perfect, my wife. And once I’d put the stupid contract and my idiotic rules aside, I’d come to learn and love her even more than I ever thought possible.

If there is such a thing as a soul mate she’s mine. I’ve never felt more complete, more worthwhile than I do now. She and our daughter are the best part of my day, everyday. No matter what else is going on in my life, the business, which was flourishing, the millions I make. None of it comes close to what those two bring to me.

She sighed in her sleep and murmured my name. “I’m right here baby.” I kissed her ear and waited in the dark for my daughter’s cry.
