“In fact, as you know, Heather was already overqualified for her position. Why don’t you hire them both? It’s really the least I can do.”

Sam nodded. “I like this idea. I need someone immediately. The last idiot missed a deduction and I had to pay an extra million on top of… well, on top of a lot of money.”

“Sounds great.” Banks’s smile was genuine for once. “Why don’t you come to my office tomorrow and we can chat? Better yet, I’ll come to you.”

“Great! And I like the idea of Heather coming back to the company. Gotta say I was really happy when she said she’d put in her two weeks, I always wanted to keep part of the company in the family. I only let her take the job here because she said you’d begged her for help.” Sam nodded solemnly.

Well, that was interesting… since Heather had been the one to come to me and ask if I would hire her. Colby’s words rang true in that moment.

Heather’s smile was frozen.

I hadn’t even needed a full-time receptionist, but she’d given me a sob story about how her father had fired her from the company.

She hadn’t changed at all.

Just as conniving as ever.

“This has truly been a very eye-opening meeting.” I said it to Sam but was looking at Heather. “I actually hadn’t needed a receptionist, she said she’d been fired. I apologize for the miscommunication.”

Her throat worked like she was having trouble keeping her perfectly polished smile in place. How had I ever thought I belonged with someone like her? What had I ever seen other than what she wanted me to?

Sam just shook his head. “I’m embarrassed, I don’t know what to say, but I apologize. Heather, collect your things immediately, you’re done today.”

Heather said nothing and stomped out of the room. Her dad followed, and I felt actually sorry for him.

Note to self, stop cussing so Ben can’t get his Bugatti and become a spoiled kid like Heather.

Exhausted, I sat in my chair and checked my phone.

Colby:

How’d it go?

Colby:

She’s showing cleavage, isn’t she?

Colby:

I’ll kill her.

Colby:

I mean really, should anyone be THAT pretty?

Colby:

I’m dying here. I have this nightmare on repeat of you taking her against the desk, throwing the stapler across the floor and just ripping her dress open and…

Colby:

Actually can we do that? I’ve always wanted to do that.

Colby:

Colby:

… I swear I’m not crazy.

Colby:

There’s this song, I want to live in a world where all your exes are dead, and I feel it on a spiritual level.

I finally took pity on her and texted her back.

Me:

Let’s not go to prison. It went well, more details when I get home, but know I miss you, and yes we can throw the stapler to the ground and have hot sex against my desk. Let’s just make sure we do it after hours so Banks doesn’t think it’s an invitation to watch.

Colby:

Thank. God. And I want to say he wouldn’t, but… the pear stealer would, he really would. Where did he come from, anyway?

Me:

No idea, he’s like the friend that forces his friendship on you until you say yes and then wonder where it all went wrong.

Colby:

So he’s me but male?

Me:

You didn’t force yourself on me at all. And don’t ever compare yourself to Banks.

Colby:

Ha ha kidding. Look at us adulting, we’re so hot right now… I mean me, I’m finally adulting.

Me:

Burning up. And you already were adulting!

Colby:

It’s getting hot in here. So take off all your clothes.

I burst out laughing. Leave it to Colby to make me laugh and change the subject. I quickly typed back.

Me:

You just aged yourself a bit.

Colby:

How dare you, sir! I’m young and know how to use TikTok. Twenty bucks you don’t even have it downloaded.

Me:

I literally have seventy thousand followers.

It took her a while to text back.

Colby:

I can’t find you…

Me:

It’s too easy with you. Do I look like I dance in front of my own camera, then wait and see how many people think I’m legit?

Colby:

Never say legit again.

I checked the time on my phone and sighed. I didn’t want to stop talking to her. I could text her all day. But instead I had another meeting in a few with a new client.

Me:

I don’t want to go, but I have another meeting.

I typed “I love you” so many times that it was embarrassing, only to delete it because wasn’t it too soon?

But I did.

I loved her.

And now I knew I always had. I had just been afraid to love someone I couldn’t control. Someone who didn’t fit in the perfect plan I had for my life, not even realizing that the perfect plan wasn’t what I needed.

No, what I needed was someone who would push me, make me laugh, someone who wouldn’t allow me to be a jackass just because my pencils weren’t straight or things weren’t going my way.
