“Life is very complicated.” Master still seemed to be at the point where he couldn’t decide if he could laugh or not because his chest kept jerking as he tried to take subtle deep breaths that were still very obvious.

When he got himself under control, he gave me a tight hug. “Should I wait to ask about the embarrassing part? I haven’t forgotten that, just in case you were hopeful.”

My groan seemed to give him permission to snicker but he kept it quick. “Fine. Torture me since I was the messenger of doom.”

That did not help his giggles but it was a good distraction for about thirty seconds.

“I’m waiting, pet.”

Letting out a sigh, I decided to just get it out…that didn’t mean I was going to stop hiding, though. “I got tested last week and my results are in. I wanted to…I was going to ask…”

Fuck.

He’d been so relaxed when he’d shown me his, I’d thought it would be easy when I did it. I was wrong. Having to admit that I’d had so few partners it’d never occurred to me to get tested had been embarrassing too. It seemed like this whole process was designed to make me uncomfortable.

Master made a soft, sexy sound instead of giggling and seemed to just be ignoring how ridiculous I probably was. “That’s sexy, pet. You were going to surprise me, weren’t you?”

Nodding against him, I felt some of the nervous tension ease out of my muscles. “Yes, and I was going to tell you that I’d thought about the question and I knew the answer now.”

Oh, that might’ve needed more words.

He might not have been obsessing over the condom or no condom discussion like I’d been. But then again, I seemed to be the one with the curious kinks, so getting turned on by the idea of him marking me might not have stuck in his head the same way it had mine.

It was all those stupid kinky romance novels’ fault but there was nothing I could do about it now.

All I could do was obsess and worry, but Master wasn’t being helpful. He simply went very still before letting out a sexy moan…so maybe he did remember that conversation? This really needed more words even though that was the last thing I usually wanted.

“Oh, pet, I think that should’ve been listed with your good news too.” His silly response made me hard and made me laugh.

It would’ve been the perfect lead-in to a very interesting discussion…and evening…but the fucking doorbell rang.

With the way my day had gone, it was either going to be a serial killer or Ralph.

Or worse…

The old ladies.

Chapter 19

Bex

Payton’s groan mirrored my own but it was his skeptical glare in the direction of the door that made me smile. “If it’s the old ladies, I’m going to let you be mean. They don’t have any limits.”

Ugh.

“That would be…” As the buzzer went off again, something important hit me. “They didn’t ring from downstairs.”

I had very few visitors but it’d seemed smart to put in an intercom system when I’d originally done the renovations. It just got used so sparingly that it had taken me entirely too long to realize whoever it was at the door had a key to downstairs.

Payton sucked in a breath and went very still as he realized what that meant too. “You said…you said only a few people had the downstairs key.”

Nodding as we both mentally went over the list, I hugged him tight as I remembered how sweet he’d been when he’d realized my giving him the key meant he was special to me. “It’s—”

“For fuck’s sake, Xavier.”

“Your father.” Payton finished my sentence in a whisper as my father’s muffled but pissed off voice came through the door.

“Yep.” I took a second to sigh and bury my face against Payton’s neck like he usually did to mine.

He gave me a tight hug and kissed my head, every inch the strong boyfriend for me. “You don’t have to open the door. That actually is an option. If someone needs to tell him this isn’t a good time, I can do it.”

Oh no.

Returning his hug, I straightened, kissing his cheek. “Nope. I will not put you in firing range of the crazy old man. He can behave or I’ll toss his ass out.”

Payton looked justifiably skeptical but I knew this couldn’t go on.

My sub was scared of my parents.

“Alright, you go read in the bedroom for a while and I’ll answer the door.” Getting him out of the path of my father’s biting words was my goal but Payton shook his head and glared at me.

He was so cute when he was offended.

“We do this together.” He actually crossed his arms over his chest like that would make him look more serious. “I will call Amanda if I have to. Hell, I’ll call Ralph and he’ll rally the old ladies. They have Facebook, you know.”
