“How did you know to come?” he asked his best friend.
“We got word of the fires here, and there was not going to be any way I did not come to see how we could help.”
To their left, the wives spoke to each other, Ciara having immediately calmed Fyre’s nerves at meeting a marchioness. Even when he’d reminded her that she was a countess, she’d shaken her head and told him, “I am just Fyre.”
To which he’d countered, “You are my Fyre, and you will continue to outshine everyone else.”
The children were playing, Bella having found an instant friend in Keeley. He smiled and shook his head at the scowl Elonne II was receiving from Hawk, Trace’s son, when he spoke to Keeley.
“You know we are putting money into your venture. Myself, Trace, Rafe. Your parents.”
“You spoke with my parents?”
Lucien laughed. “Of course. You ignore them, so they come to me to be kept apprised of how you are doing here. You’ve flourished.”
“It was Fyre. She was the spark I needed.”
“And how is it going to be to have four children?”
Phillip rubbed his face and looked over at his pregnant wife. Their house would be done before the baby arrived and everyone would be where they should be. His fields were taking shape again and the coalition had only grown. “I have never been so fucking scared in my life. I almost lost her once. I have no idea how to be a father.”
“Bullshit. You already are. Those three hang on your every word.”
Trace and Rafe came over and the four of them stood together in companionable silence.
“I get it now,” Phillip admitted. “Took me all this time, but I fucking get it now.”
None of them asked him to elaborate, for they knew. And he hadn’t lied—he understood now why these men had done what they had for their women, because that kind of love changes a person.
The wind picked up and Fyre turned toward him, the sun highlighting the swell of her body as she carried his child. She lifted one hand in a wave and he returned it, even as his smile grew bigger.
She touched her chest where his signet ring once again rested—her silent way of telling him she loved him. He kissed two fingers in his response. Phillip had never known he could love someone so powerfully and deeply. Never known that sometimes you just needed a spark to get you on your way to being a better person all around. But he had found the one for him and she would forever be his spark.
