Tasha stood by the door, her eyes wide. “He left. He went out the door and got in a car. I don’t think he knew them.”

MaeBe felt her heart threaten to stop. “Who?”

“Kyle.” Tasha looked so lost. “He didn’t even say good-bye. He was talking to someone on his phone and he left. Why would he leave when Kala’s missing?”

He wouldn’t. “I need you to tell me everything that happened.”

Tasha nodded. “He told me to stay inside, but he walked out. There was a big guy with something over his face, and I think he had a gun.”

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Julia already had him. She’d found the perfect way to make him walk willingly into her trap.

Cooper looked so young. So damn vulnerable. “It’s something to do with Kala. She’s in real trouble. She’s not sitting in a ramen place waiting for me to show up, is she?”

Alex stepped in close to his son. “It’s nothing for you to worry about. I’m going to have your mom take you home. She’s changing right now.”

Cooper’s hands fisted at his sides. “Don’t. Don’t you tell me I shouldn’t worry. I’m old enough to make the decision to completely ignore all of your rules. I’m old enough to worry that doing that cost my…cost Kala. She could be dead. She could be… I don’t want to think about all the things she could be. I know you think I’m a kid, but don’t tell me not to worry.”

“You are a kid and you did something reckless and you will have to face the consequences. I know you’re scared, but do not give me more to worry about. You have to trust that Kala’s father and I know how to deal with this. You will go with your mother and you will do everything she asks you to because you don’t want to be the reason someone has to take even a second away from trying to find Kala,” Alex said.

Kyle had left her again. She understood why he’d done it, but he’d left and he hadn’t even sent her a text or told one of the kids to say good-bye for him. Julia had called and he’d gone.

Because he had to save Kala. He did exactly what you would have done.

“Was she in that car?” Charlotte asked. “I’m getting in mine and following. Tell Chelsea to call me with updates.”

Ian’s jaw tightened. “Baby, I know you need to do something, but if you chase them, they will do what they have to. You risk getting into a wreck or a shootout.”

“You can’t expect me to sit here,” Charlotte argued.

Ian simply moved close to her and wrapped his arms around his wife, holding her tight. Charlotte was still for a moment and then her arms went around him, and a shudder went through her. They held each other, giving each other strength.

“I’m going to the security office.” She didn’t have anyone to hold her because Kyle had walked away once again.

It wasn’t fair. In her head a calmer voice kept telling her to slow down, but the part of her that still ached from her father’s abandonment was louder.

She needed to get to work. She would pull up the security cameras, see if they could get a plate off the car. She needed to check all the private airfields between here and…Oklahoma City? All the way down to Austin? Or should she check to San Antonio?

She found herself walking down the hall as Ian was issuing orders. He said something about finding Joseph and making sure he hadn’t left the building. She heard Adam talking and Charlotte on the phone.

She kept walking until she made it into the security office.

West stood there behind one of the two desks the guards used, the landline in his hand. He held the receiver up to his ear. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea.”

Oh, she knew who that was. Julia had already had her talk with Kyle, so she would know exactly where to find MaeBe. She would call into the security office because on a play night, it was the only place where a phone would be monitored.

“Does she want to talk to me?” It was a stupid question. She knew the answer, and it shouldn’t have been a question at all. That was old MaeBe talking. “Give me the phone, West.”

“I should go get Kyle,” West hedged. “I’m not sure where he went.”

“She’s already got Kyle.” MaeBe held out a hand. “Julia kidnapped Kala and then Kyle. Give me the phone, West.”

West handed her the receiver and stepped back.

“I didn’t have to kidnap Kyle,” Julia purred over the line. “He walked right out of that prison you had him in. He’s on his way to me right now.”

She was crazy and that didn’t matter. “What do you want, Julia?”
