Once again, I’m being asked to approach the desk.
Yet this time I don’t hear any warning bells or feel any apprehension.
Without even really thinking about it, I walk forward.
But then I stop.
Lucifer immediately scowls at me, and I force myself to ignore it.
Turning around, I walk up to Martin’s lifeless body and yank my knife out of his throat.
“Almost forgot,” I say sheepishly as I wipe the blade off on my dress.
Lucifer laughs.
Simon mutters something under his breath.
Once I’ve gotten the blade as clean as I can possibly get it, I slide it back into the sheath on my thigh and walk up to the desk.
Lucifer pulls the chair out for me and Simon starts sliding papers across the desk.
Just as I take my seat though a loud bang echoes through the room.
Everyone tenses.
Lucifer and Simon turn to look toward the hallway, and I turn to look with them.
James comes stomping into the room. “Sorry I’m late. I had a heck of time getting the—”
Glancing at what’s left of Martin, James comes to a sudden stop. “Well… shit.”
I feel myself tensing even more as I closely watch James’s reaction.
Fear, true fear, pumps through my veins.
It’s like he’s finally seeing my dirty little secret, and I have no clue how he’s going to react.
Is he going to flip out?
Is he going to keep me from Sophia?
Will he put a bullet in my head?
James stares so long at Martin, at Martin’s mangled groin, my palms sweat and I’m afraid I might have a fucking heart attack.
But then he turns to Lucifer and whines, “I always miss all the fun.”
Pure relief washes over me.
Lucifer smirks. “We waited as long as we could for you.”
James nods then he groans in realization. “Fuck. I guess we don’t need that goat now, huh? Little bastard is in my car right now, chewing on the seatbelts.”
Lucifer drums his fingers thoughtfully against the desk for a moment. “It is a little late, but we really should do this properly.”
Lucifer looks down at me and gives me the strangest smile. “Go ahead and bring it in.”
