They took the trail to the creek. The scenery was barren and gray, evening having already come, the sky cloudy and the air around them foggy.

August grabbed ahold of Clint and pulled him close. He came easily, the two of them wrapping their arms around each other. “One day, I’m going to marry you, right here in this spot.”

Clint grinned. “Is that a fact? Are you asking me something?”

“Not yet, but I figured I should prepare you. You’re super old, and you’ve never been married, so I wasn’t sure if you’d want to settle down so late in life.”

Clint barked out a laugh. “Sometimes I think you forget we’re the same age…and you act older than me.”

“Take it back.” August nipped at his neck, then sighed. “Can you imagine if we knew then what we know now? If those two boys knew years would separate them but that they’d find their way back to each other and end up right where they belonged?”

“I think they knew it all along,” Clint replied, always saying the perfect thing.

“I think they did too.” He took Clint’s hand. “Will you say yes? When I ask?”

“Yeah, but the thing is, I might ask first.”

August mock-gasped. “You wouldn’t!”

“Oh, I would. Will you say yes?”

“Obviously.”

Clint grinned. “Well, neither of us knows when to expect it or who will do it first. It’ll be a surprise to both of us.”

They laughed the way they so often did together, before August said, “Come on, Clint. Let’s go home.”

Together. The way they were always meant to be.
