Stepping away from the counter, she rounded the kitchen, heading toward the door. It was only open slightly. In all the times she’d eaten in the dining room, she couldn’t remember if the door squeaked. Putting a finger toward the door, she pressed it open. No noise. Alix kept pushing it, hoping no one would notice the door opening. When it was wide enough for her to fit through, she closed her eyes and prayed to whatever god was watching over her, and then she focused.

Peering her head around the door, she saw George first, on the floor, lifeless. Angeloff had his back to her. He held a gun in his hand that was directed at Dmitry. As for Dmitry, he was tied to one of the dining room chairs. She looked at him, and she knew he saw her.

Taking another deep breath, she began to advance in the room, taking her steps calmly. She didn’t wear any shoes and her parents had always told her she was light on her feet. Kind of strange for being a curvy woman, but she didn’t need to think about that right now. For all she knew, her parents could have been lying to her.

Alix held the knife in her hand. She had no idea what she was doing.

“This should never have been yours. This was all mine. Your father should have given it to me. You’re nothing but a waste of space. Your wife didn’t even have what it took to give you sons. I know the truth. Your spunk was nothing more than a girl’s.” Angeloff spat. “You are nothing. You are useless and everyone around you sees it. That’s why you have no one, Dmitry. It’s why you’re scum.”

Alix knew exactly what she was doing as she thrust the blade right in Angeloff’s side, startling him. Before he had chance to react, she drew the blade out and because he had turned, she had the perfect angle to slam the blade in his neck, which she did, only this time she didn’t pull it back out.

“He has me,” Alix said.

Dmitry was already out of his chair, taking the gun from Angeloff, and firing it right between the eyes. Angeloff fell to the ground and Alix turned to Dmitry.

She went to him. He wrapped his arms around her. There was blood on her hands, but she didn’t care. She had to hold him.

"Wait, stop, how did you get out? You were tied to a chair?" She couldn't think, but she was just so pleased he was alive.

"Do you really think anything was going to stop me?" He then turned, and she followed his gaze as he looked to the floor. There was one of the smallest pocket knives she had seen.

“I love you,” she said. “I love you so much and no one is taking you away from me.”

“Why did you leave the fucking safe room?” Dmitry asked, pulling away to cup her face. “Why did you do that? You could have been killed. My men have this building surrounded.”

“What? I tell you I love you and you’re angry at me.”

“Don’t you get it, Alix? Nothing can happen to you. Nothing. I fucking love you, more than anything. You and Sofia are the only two things in my life that are precious and good, and I had this.”

Alix shook her head. “You were tied to a chair.”

“I was giving my men time.”

“I don’t care!” she screamed. “I saw you and I panicked. I know you only know people who betray you and you cannot trust, but I’m not one of them. I love you. I will always be here for you.” She sniffled. “I will never break my promise nor my vows.”

Dmitry pressed his lips to hers. “Fuck me, Alix, I love you. I … I couldn’t believe it when I saw you. A fucking kitchen knife?”

“It was all I could find without making too much noise,” Alix said. “Does this mean our wedding needs to be called off?”

“Are you out of your freaking mind?” he asked. “You just saved me with a damn kitchen knife. No, you’re my wife and I’m making sure that ring never leaves your finger.” He brushed his hand across her finger. “Where is it?”

“With Sofia,” Alix said. “She’s waiting for us.”

“Promise me you won’t do anything stupid like that again?”

Alix shook her head. “No, I can’t promise anything. I love you and there is no way I’m going to make promises to you that I can’t keep. What I can promise you is that I will love you forever, that I will stand by you, that I will always be here for you.”

“You are everything, Alix,” he said, and then pulled her in for a hug. “Let’s go and grab our girl.”
