“You did not buy a house so I could do rehab there.”

“Yes, I did. I already told you I was spending money on your care.”

“But you—”

“Did this because I want to, and you’re not going to argue with me.”

I turned to Worth to see if he was going to be on my side. The wistful look on his face made my chest tighten.

“Are you ok?” Carter asked him.

“I…yes. Sorry. I got lost in thought.”

Carter had said Worth wasn’t interested in having a serious relationship, but I wasn’t so sure, not with the way he was looking at us.

An alarm went off on Carter’s phone. “It’s time to get Matteo up and moving around.”

“I guess I should go then,” Worth said as he headed for the door.

I could tell he didn’t want to leave. “You don’t have to.”

Worth looked at his watch. “I’d better show up at the office soon. I’ve only gotten about a hundred messages since I’ve been here. See you soon.” With a quick wave, he left.

As Carter and I made a slow circle through the hallways of my unit, I asked Carter what he thought about Worth’s odd behavior.

“I think once you’re better we need to sit down with Miles and Ford and figure out how to convince Worth he needs what we all have.”

“Is he really going to listen?” I asked.

“We’re rather persuasive.”

“Would you have listened to the rest of them?”

Carter frowned. “Fuck no.”

“Exactly what I thought.”

When I woke in the middle of the afternoon several days later, Carter wasn’t there. Miles had taken his place.

“He’ll be back,” Miles said when he realized I was awake.

“Did he leave you in charge?”

“More like I threatened him with kidnapping if he didn’t leave and take the time to get some fresh clothes and food that wasn’t from the hospital. He’s only left here once since you were brought in, and that was for about fifteen minutes when Ford insisted he go with him to get some fresh air.”

“It’s been almost two weeks.”

Miles sighed. “I know.”

“He doesn’t have to be here every second.”

“Try telling him that.”

I snorted. “No thanks.”

“Exactly.”

“So, how much do you hate me for trying to take care of Landon on my own?” I asked him.

“At first, a whole damn lot, but I know why you did it.”

“And you’d do the same for Ben.”

He took a suspiciously long time inspecting the lapel of his coat. “Ben doesn’t have any military training, so it’s a little different.”

“Neither do you.”

Miles shrugged. “I’ve picked up a number of skills.”

“So I’ve heard.”

“You put your life on the line for Carter, and I respect that. Of course, if you’d died, I’d be furious.”

I grinned. “Of course.”

“Thank you. For taking care of him.”

I nodded. “I’m not going to stop doing it. I don’t know if I’ll let him out of my sight again once I’m able to get out of here.”

“He’s with several guards right now. We’re still working on eliminating the cartel, but it’s going to take a while. Trust me, we’re not taking any more risks. In fact, I’d like to offer you a job once you’re in shape for it.”

“Really? You want to work with me day in and day out?”

“You’d be Carter’s problem, not mine.”

“Uh huh.”

Miles sighed. “You’d be a huge asset to us, and it would be an honor to have you at Montgomery Enterprises.”

Before I could respond, Carter opened the door and stepped into my room. “Sorry I’m late.”

Miles rolled his eyes. “I told you to take as long as you needed. Tell me you ate something decent.”

“I grabbed a sandwich on the way back.”

“Carter, you can’t keep doing this.”

“Yes, I can. I—”

“Miles offered me a job,” I said, breaking up their argument.

Carter shook his head. “You’re not taking it.”

My eyes widened as I stared at him.

“What the fuck, Carter?” Miles asked.

He closed his eyes and drew in a long breath. “I’ve been thinking a lot about the future.”

I tensed. “Carter, we’ll work it out, whatever it is. If you don’t want me working with you then—”

“No, I do, but I…I control the family assets now and—”

“You want to be a businessman?” Miles asked, shock clear on his face.

“No, not really. You know we’ve been working on getting people in place that I trust. I don’t have any interest in running things day-to-day, but I thought we could start a new division, a security and rescue division. I want Matteo to work with me on developing it.”

“You do?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“That sounds perfect.” I glanced at Miles, not sure what his reaction would be, but he was smiling, bigger than I’d ever seen.

“Congratulations, Carter.”

“You don’t mind?” he asked.

“No. I will hate replacing you, but I’ve known all along that this was a temporary situation. Eventually you were going to branch out and do something on your own.”

“I’d like you to offer my position to Martin.”
