“But we’re super happy you’re all here,” Harper said, giving him a little punch.
“Yeah, we are,” he agreed.
A little later in the night I took Pearl down the hill just past the fire. The grass was cool on our bare feet and the sound of laughter and conversation was faint.
“Where are we going?” Pearl asked.
“Anywhere you want.” I stopped, taking her hands in mine and meeting her eyes. “But right here seems good to me.”
She put her arms around my waist, pressing herself into me. “It’s not so bad.”
“There was something I wanted to ask you,” I said.
“Okay.”
“Do you ever want to start a family?”
“You mean having kids?”
“Yeah.”
“Honestly, I’d kind of given up on the idea of relationships ever working out for me. I haven’t thought about it in a long time.”
“I was wondering if you’d thought about it in the last month or so.”
She smirked. “I would say I have never thought about letting my boyfriend get me pregnant, no. I have considered letting my husband put a baby in me, though. If I had one.”
“Is that right? Well, we could fix that.”
She took in a sharp breath.
“Marry me, Pearl.”
“You’re supposed to ask, not demand it.”
“Now look who is suddenly Little Miss Particular.”
She laughed. She was bouncing on her feet and clutching my hands. “Yes. Yes. Of course I’ll marry you. But you have to promise me one thing.”
“Anything.”
“Never break my heart.”
“Break it? I wouldn’t even dream of letting it get scuffed.” I took her hands and put them on my chest. “Feel this? That’s where your heart is. And it’s fucking Fort Knox in there.”
“Isn’t all the gold in Fort Knox fake?”
“Okay. It’s The Alamo.”
“Didn’t the Alamo end up getting taken?”
I sighed. “My history sucks. It’s some historical fort that has never been taken and never will be, okay?”
She chewed her lip. “Okay.”
“Oh, I guess you might want this.” I pulled the little box I’d been carrying with me for the last two weeks from my back pocket. I opened it, showing her the ring. “Sorry, it’s not frog themed, but I–”
Pearl jumped into my arms, making me drop the ring as we both laughed. “I love it,” she said into my shoulder. “I love you.”

OR… if you fell in love with the little town of Fairhope, I’ve actually written two stories that take place Fairhope. Once Upon A Bet follows Greyson and Harper in a juicy age gap romance. And then Once Upon A Grump features Christian Stone and Lola, which is another grumpy boss romcom that explains the origins of the Stone Tower outside Fairhope and much more.

GREYSON (ONCE UPON A BET SNEAK PEAK)
The two little people behind me giggled while we waited in line. I knew exactly what that giggle meant but pretended I didn’t. Rule number one of being a fun dad was playing along. It was honestly pretty easy to keep kids happy if you just stuck to that simple rule. Unfortunately, keeping my ex-wife happy hadn’t been nearly as simple.
I showed no sign of hearing the giggling. I stuffed my hands in my pockets and looked around, just admiring the dinky little small town general store. That was me–the totally unsuspecting dad. Just the old guy taking a nostalgic look around his former stomping grounds. There wasn’t a clue in my mind that my little angels were scheming behind me.
