He rolled the windows down halfway, and the breeze floated through the car, rustling his hair.

It was amazing how he was more handsome now than he’d ever been.

“I guess I am,” Mitch said, staring out at the road ahead. “Or maybe they’re not really changes, per se. Maybe it’s… just that I’m finally ready to be who I really am.”

He reached over, squeezing his hand on my thigh. I covered his hand with my own.

And for the first time, it didn’t matter at all if Mitch was my best friend, my boyfriend, or potentially someday something more.

He was all of those things. And most importantly, he was here with me for the long haul. Even if the long haul meant I would have to drink protein shakes for breakfast sometimes. Even if it meant I had to help him with woodworking projects or pretend I cared about who won football games.

I loved every fucking minute of it with Mitch. He was my person, and I wanted to be his, for the rest of our lives.

I looked over at him, squeezing his hand on my thigh.

“Whoever’s naked first when we get home is the winner,” I said.

“Oh, baby, you are on,” Mitch said, smiling.

I loved that every game Mitch and I played was kind of rigged, though. We both won. We both got what we wanted.

You know. Like best friends always should.
