I take a deep breath. “I want to thank you for all the support over the years. It’s been a pleasure playing for the people of Portland.” I turn off the microphone and stand. More questions are asked but I ignore them and walk off stage and out the door, heading to the small room where I waited for the press conference to start.
Before I can even sit down, Peyton rushes in and pulls me into her arms. Somehow, I manage to shut the door. As soon as it clicks shut, I let the tears flow. I’m angry with the Pioneers, but also damn happy they thought they could screw me over. Now, I get to be home with Maverick, Jace, and Juniper. I can give back to Beaumont and help Mack’s team thrive. Maybe even bring another championship to Beaumont High.
And if I have a change of heart, I’ll come back. There’s a team out there that wants me, even if it’s for a year or two. That team just won’t be my beloved Portland Pioneers.
