“Oakley.” Fudge-muffin. “I need to speak with you. Alone.” Since the beginning of the school year, I’ve gotten good at avoiding Mr. Richardson. Until my occupied mind slipped up and let me down. I don’t know what it is about the older man that gives me the creeps, but I trust my instincts.

Something about his leering looks and his tendency to invade my personal space really raise red flags. I’ve been tempted to tell Rafe about how uncomfortable the principal makes me, but I was scared my overprotective fiancé would come in guns blazing to protect me.

“I’m on my way out, but I’ll come in early on Monday,” I try to negotiate. At least Monday morning, the school will be brimming with people.

“I’d like to talk to you today,” he insists. “It won’t take long.” Pulling up my big girl panties, I follow him to the main office. Just as I suspected, the school is pretty much deserted. No one sticks around after the last bell rings on Friday afternoon.

“Have a seat,” he tells me and shuts the office door. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up as claustrophobia assails me.

“Thank you.” I give him a fake smile, hoping I’m totally wrong about Mr. Richardson.

“I’ve heard very disturbing news about you.” He sits back and frowns. “Are you really planning to marry some thug biker?” Who in the world does this asshole think he is? My temper rises as he continues. “Your career might not survive such an event.” He sounds like a freaking idiot.

“I don’t think who I marry should affect my career,” I bite out through clenched teeth. “And my fiancé is a respected architect who happens to be in a motorcycle club.” Put that in your pipe and smoke it, jerk.

“Oakley, I’m going to tell you exactly how things are. You won’t be welcome to teach at Silver Spoon Falls High School if you don’t call off this wedding.” This asshole has lost his mind.

Red hot anger flows through my veins as I attempt to control my mouth. The desire to blast this creep is overwhelming. Taking a deep breath, I remind him, “It’s not the nineteenth century. Women are allowed to decide who they are going to marry. And I don’t appreciate your threat. I’m sure my fiancé will want to have a word with you once I tell him about our little conversation.” I rush out the door while the jerk sputters threats behind me.

Driving home, I try to decide how to tell Rafe about Mr. Richardson’s threats. Shoot, this is going to blindside him since I haven’t mentioned my past problems with the principal.

“What’s wrong?” Rafe roars and rushes over to me the second I open the door. Moose jumps a mile high before running to hide behind the sofa. “Are you hurt?” He starts running his hands around my body, and I almost forget my anger as lust bursts through me.

“I have to talk to you.” I take his hand. “And I need you to stay calm and let me explain everything.”

“Explain fast,” Rafe demands, and I rush to tell him my whole issue.

“I’m having problems with the school principal.” It doesn’t sound so bad when I say it that way. “He gives me the creeps,” I add, and Rafe raises an eyebrow at me.

“Today, he told me that I’m going to lose my job if I marry you.” Oops. That does it. I rush through the rest, explaining Mr. Richardson’s tendency to stand too close and leer at me.

Rafe’s face turns bright red seconds before he explodes. “What the fuck? Why didn’t you tell me the asshole has been giving you problems?”

“I thought I was imagining it.” I swallow. “And I thought I could handle the big jerk on my own,” I add.

“You don’t have to have to handle anything on your own.” Rafe pulls me close. “I’m here to take care of you.” He kisses me, and I feel the anger coursing off him in waves. “Once I kick the motherfucker’s ass, I’m going to come home and spank you until you believe me.”

“Wait.” I stop him. “I don’t want you to end up in jail the week before our wedding.”

Rafe stares into my eyes while taking several deep breaths. “He didn’t lay a hand on you?” my fiancé asks.

“No,” I reassure him. “He just made me feel uncomfortable up until he threatened my job today.”

“Okay.” Rafe runs his hand down his face. “I’ll talk to Cash and see how he thinks I should handle this.”

I wrap my arms around him and squeeze. “Thank you.”

“You don’t have to thank me for doing my job.” Rafe kisses me until my knees turn weak. “I’ll do whatever I have to, to keep you safe and happy.”

“I’m so lucky to have you.” I close my eyes and let his warmth wrap around me.
