Her mouth went dry. “You can’t talk to me like that.”

“Why not?”

“I’m your … nanny. I work for you.”

“I don’t pay you and this isn’t a job you applied for. I forced you into it because I was told you were the nicest human my men had ever seen. You took a lot of crap from your own, and you don’t hit back. I know that baby up there is safe with you. That’s why I picked you.”

“That’s not a good reason.”

“It’s the only reason you’re going to get.” He stroked her cheek, tucking some hair behind her ear. “I’m used to women falling all over themselves to please me. You don’t. Why?”

She shrugged. “I don’t know how. I’m … I’m not used to this.”

“Do you like my touch? Or do you find it repulsive.”

“I … I like it.”

“Good.” His finger went to her chin and he kept her head back. She wanted to close her eyes, especially as he kept returning his gaze to her lips. She found it hard to concentrate. “I want to kiss you,” he said.

“Are you asking me for permission?”

“I never ask for permission.”

“I don’t think that’s true,” she said. “Otherwise, you’d have kissed me—”

She didn’t get to finish talking as he slammed his lips down on hers and silenced any protest. At first, she didn’t know what the hell to do. It had been a long time since she’d been thoroughly kissed, but he knew what he was doing.

From the very first brush, her mouth opened of its own accord. His tongue slid across her lips, delving into her mouth. She gasped, arching up against him.

“Kiss me back.” He muttered the words against her lips, and she did. Closing her eyes, she tried not to think about what this could mean. She’d never kissed anyone and now, Rocko was her first.

The hand on her cheek didn’t stay there. She cried out as he cupped her breast, stroking her nipple. She was desperate for more of his touch. The flimsy pajama shirt didn’t leave anything to the imagination.

Rocko slowly lowered the strap of her shirt. Each inch it fell down her body, the more exposed she became until her tit fell free for his gaze. He did the same to the other. The shirt had a stretch to it, so it didn’t cause her any pain or tightness as he slid it down her body. It rested at her waist.

What are you doing?

She honestly didn’t know what the hell she was doing. Her body wasn’t her own. She was on fire with need. A fire burned deep in the pit of her stomach, begging for her to be set free. She wanted his touch and that was what scared her. There was no future for either of them with a man like Rocko. He was the alpha of his pack. She was nothing but a human. He’d never pick her.

Don’t think about it.

He broke the kiss and his lips trailed down to her neck, sucking on her pulse. She cried out as he sucked hard, but he didn’t stop there. No, down he went until he hovered at her nipples. She watched him with bated breath to see what he’d do. There was not a single rush to him.

She waited.

Desperate.

Hungry.

Waiting.

A wailing pierced the air.

The sound came from the living room where she’d left the device to keep an ear out for Daphne. She wanted to groan in frustration at being interrupted. While he was distracted, she pulled out of his embrace and quickly adjusted her shirt. She was saved from doing something crazy. Without giving him any indication she was coming back, she quickly rushed upstairs to the crying baby waiting for her. She picked her up, smelling that she needed a diaper change.

“It’s okay. I’m here. I’m here.” She was aware of the device downstairs and so she didn’t say anything else, like how grateful she was for being interrupted, even though her body protested. Sleeping with Rocko would be a big mistake. She didn’t know why it would be, but she knew he was only using her.

Her first time, she had always wanted it to be with someone special, not because she was a convenience and right now, for Rocko, that was exactly what she was. She wasn’t going to fall for a man who enjoyed killing humans for sport, no matter what her body wanted from him.

Chapter Five

Bringing the axe up above his head, Rocko focused on the log of wood and brought it down the instant Winter’s face entered his thoughts. He didn’t want to think about her. After Daphne interrupted them, she hadn’t returned and he hadn’t pursued her.

Should he have?

Why was he wasting sleep on a woman who clearly didn’t want him? She was also human. There were plenty of wolf females who would beg for his attention.
