As we walk, Selena leans into me and whispers, “See the blonde with the big boobs over there?” She juts her chin at a far corner table. “That’s him sitting across from her.”

I look to where Selena has indicated and quickly spot our mark—a guy in a black shirt with broad shoulders and salt-and-pepper hair, who’s sitting across from a young blonde with noticeably large breasts.

“Even the back of his head looks douchey,” I whisper, making Selena laugh. But I can’t help noticing, just this fast, the guy seems like a force to be reckoned with. Even from the back, it’s clear he’s got a pretty muscular frame, far more muscular than mine. But not only that, even from behind, he’s got an unmistakably commanding presence. “Okay, baby,” I say, squeezing her hand. “Let’s turn up the heat as we walk by—make it look like we just got finished fucking before arriving here and can’t wait to do it again.”

“Which is true,” she murmurs.

She drops my hand, snakes her arm around my waist, and snuggles close, so I slide my palm squarely onto her glorious ass cheek.

“Okay if I grope your ass noticeably as we walk by?” I whisper.

“Please do,” she whispers back. “And say my name. Loudly.”

Right on cue, as we’re passing the douchebag’s head, I squeeze Selena’s ass with my full palm in a way I’d never normally do in public, especially not in a hoity-toity restaurant like this, and say, much too loudly, “Damn, Selena, I can’t wait to get back to the hotel and rail you again.”

Selena, on my left, turns her head to smile wickedly at me, presumably giving her ex to my right a fantastic view of her face.

“Selena,” a deep male voice blurts, and she comes to a sudden stop, halting me along with her.

“Andre?” she says, sounding impressively surprised. So, of course, I take the opportunity to peek at the asshole.

No.

Oh, God, no.

Fuck.

Selena’s douchebag ex is Andre De La Torre! My motherfucking boss. And by “boss,” I don’t mean he’s my immediate supervisor in the IT department at the law firm where I work. I don’t mean he’s my boss’s boss, either. No, the man currently staring at me with hard, murderous eyes is everyone’s fucking boss at my employer— which, by the way, is called Finch, Gardner & De La Torre. He’s the managing partner and co-founder of the firm, a guy whose last name is literally engraved in marble above the goddamned door.

And even worse than all that, Andre De La Torre personally oversees operations at the firm, including overseeing all employees, both legal and non-legal, including lowly minions like me in the IT department, including overseeing all hiring, firing, and promotions, all of which ultimately require the big boss’s stamp of approval.

I can’t believe this is happening! I interviewed with Andre De La Torre just this past week in his sleek corner office, as the last hurdle in my quest to nab that coveted promotion! Which means, unless this man’s got some sort of facial amnesia or another neurological disorder, he’s currently recognizing me as the lowly IT guy who’s gunning for a big promotion at his law firm, every bit as much as I’m recognizing him as the man who signs my paychecks and holds my current career aspirations in the palm of his hand.

“You were so lucky to get a table tonight—especially such a cozy one!” Selena is saying, as Andre’s laser-like, dark eyes burn holes into my eye sockets. “Grayson and I are only grabbing drinks in the bar. Oh, Andre, this is my boyfriend, Grayson—”

“McKnight,” Andre interjects, his jaw tight.

Selena looks at me, her dark eyes wide. “You know Andre?”

“He works for me,” Andre says, his voice steely.

“No, I used to work for you,” I say, sounding far calmer than I feel. “Consider this my official resignation, asshole.”

“Grayson!” Selena gasps out, her body wobbling against mine. “No!”

“Consider this your immediate termination, asshole,” Andre fires back.

I slide my arm around Selena’s shoulders to steady her, not breaking eye contact with the man who clearly wants to slide his large hands around my neck. “Selena’s told me all about you, and I have zero desire to work for a lying, cheating scumbag.”

“Oh shit, let’s go,” Selena mutters, tugging on my arm, as her ex rises from the table, shouting a string of expletives.

“Not here!” a waiter shouts, appearing out of nowhere to fill the space between Andre and me.

“This woman is a fucking queen,” I shout at Andre, as the waiter pushes me backward. “The fact that you cheated on her tells me everything I need to know about you.” As the waiter drags me back, I shout to the young blonde at the table, who currently looks like a deer in headlights. “If you’re dating him for his money, you’re gonna earn every penny, sweetheart!”
