He returns the kiss, then distances himself in the way I know so well.
He gives me a look.
I recognize it from the previous pregnancies.
He’s saying, The hormones have got you feeling excited, have they?
“Later,” he says huskily, kissing my forehead. He holds himself there for a moment. “But don’t think that means you’re easy to resist. If the kids weren’t here.”
“I know,” I whisper.
Once, telling him I know to a suggestion of lust would’ve felt impossible for me. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to agree that Weston Wyatt could find me attractive.
But now I know it right down in my soul.
He wants me as hungrily as I want him. The passion never wanes.
He wraps his arm around me as we watch the children play, the three of them running through the snow, the Rockies in the background, more flakes lacing the air.
Suddenly, there’s something cold on my cheeks sliding down.
The air caresses my tears.
Weston notices, leans down, and tenderly kisses them away.
“We’re the luckiest people alive, aren’t we?” he says, a crack in his voice.
“We definitely are.” I dig playfully at his side. “Mr. Hollywood.”
He chuckles, squeezing me tighter. “It’s been a while since you called me that, Miss Mystery… You still are, you know.”
“I’m still what?” I ask.
“A mystery to me. Every time I see you put a Band-Aid on one of the kids, give a speech at a PR conference, or sit us all down and tell us a story by the fire… you’re a mystery. Your beauty. Your uniqueness. I’ll never stop wanting to solve you.”
“I love you,” I whisper.
