I slammed down on my brakes and was out the truck before he was done spinning out. I saw that she was parked on the side of the street bent over at the knee trying to catch her breath. She was okay for now that was good enough. it was a good damn thing the street was damn near empty or who knew how many people could’ve been hurt by this fuck.

I pulled the asshole out of the front seat where he still seemed a little stunned. If I’d had any doubts as to his purpose here tonight the way he was dressed laid them to rest. He was in full black from head to toe and the ski mask on the seat next to him only spelt trouble. “What the fuck were you planning to do to her?”

He looked at me like he was surprised to see me there but he wasn’t talking. A fist to his face broke his nose but the fucker still wasn’t saying anything. I heard Camille calling out to me from a dark haze and came out of it in time to see that if I hit him again I’d probably finish his ass. He was a bloody mess.

“Cone on Grant let him up, daddy’s on the way.” I thought to ask her what her daddy was gonna do here but that shit slipped my mind. I was still mad as fuck but this piece a shit was in no mood to talk. When the fuck had I knocked him unconscious?

Brady and the judge pulled up not long after she got me to drop him next to his car. “Well now what have we here?”

“This piece a shit came outta nowhere. At first I thought he had lost control but then I realized he was after her.” Just saying the words made me want to wake the fuck up to kick his ass again.

Both men looked from one of us to the other with raised brows but I didn’t have time for their shit. “Come here.” She ran to my side not seeming to care that they were there either and I figured the cat was out of the bag and it was about damn time too. “You okay? Let me look at you.”

“I’m fine Grant you’re the one that was in the accident you idiot.” She hit me in the chest with her tiny fist and I could only roll my eyes at her drama. I held her close under my arm as we waited for the sheriff who wasn’t too far behind. When the judge called everyone hopped to it.

“I have to go deal with this, don’t move from this spot.” I passed her off to her daddy as a crowd started to gather. Nosy ass people!

CAMILLE

Daddy hadn’t said anything about me and Grant and I wondered if grandpa had said something to him. One look at the old goat and his slight shake of the head said he knew exactly what I was thinking. It was good to know that he hadn’t revealed my secret; that meant I still had an ally that I could run to in what had become my topsy-turvy world.

“Daddy, how come you don’t seem surprised about me and Grant?” he hugged me to his side and kissed my hair just as he did when I was a child. It went a long way to easing some of the frayed nerves running riot inside of me.

“That night I picked you up from Grant’s you were more upset about him than your broken engagement. You kept going on and on about how insufferable he was. I’d noticed a few things here and there over the years, but nothing that made me sit up and take notice like that night. Your mother and I had a long talk about it and found that we’d both suspected something along the way but never put too much stock in it.

The day he came over and you hightailed it out of there was pretty much the nail in the coffin so to speak. Sorry if it seems we were meddling, we just want what’s best for our little girl, and if Grant’s what makes you happy well then…”

I didn’t know what to say and I was so grateful that he didn’t ask about my failed engagement that I just hugged him closer. I noticed a familiar face in the gathering crowd. “One second daddy.”

I wasn’t sure that she’d seen me leave daddy’s side and make a roundabout way around the crowd to get to her; she was too focused on my man. I was getting pretty tired of these trollops around here.

I tapped her on the shoulder and was ready when she turned to face me. “Are you crazy?” Her loud screech alerted the rest of the crowd that there was something more exciting going on than what the sheriff and Grant were trying to get out of the man that was finally coming awake.
