“Tell me you believe me.” I ran my thumb over her cheek; so soft, so precious, and I keep fucking up with her. Her nod eased the knot in my chest just barely and when she didn’t resist my kiss it went a long way to making me feel more on steady ground.

“Grant my boy what’re you doing here?”

“I’m here for Camille.” I wasn’t expecting the smirk he gave me, I’d been prepared for a fight at least. After all I had a reputation with women, which he knew better than most. I was sure me showing up on his doorstep on the hunt for his little girl would get his hackles up.

I should’ve known better than to trust that change in her yesterday. when the time for her to be back had come and gone I’d thought I was giving her breathing space to get over her mad, but when she didn’t sneak into my bed this morning for one of her surprise blow jobs and her morning dose of vitamin E, I knew some shit was up.

“Well now, what’s this about if you don’t mind my asking?” He rocked back and forth on his heels with his hands shoved into his pockets. If I didn’t know better I would swear he’d been waiting for me, but that didn’t make any sense. Then again we’ve always been friends, maybe he didn’t think anything of it. If only he knew.

“If you don’t mind I’d like to talk to her first.”

“Well now that’s going to be hard to do seeing as she’s not here.” I think my heart left its place and ended up somewhere in my gut.

“What do you mean not here?” I caught myself just before I grabbed him up by his shirt.”

“Just what I said. She lit out of here like a bat outta hell yesterday afternoon, said she was going down to her friend Ann-Marie’s house for a spell.”

“Where does this Ann-Marie live?” I was already heading back the way I came. I was going after her little ass and drag her back kicking and screaming if I had to.

“Well, now, she’s all the way over in Bimini for the summer.” He sounded like he was fighting a laugh.

“How the fuck…? Why did you let her go to Bimini?”

“I wasn’t aware there was any reason why she shouldn’t leave, what with the broken engagement and all, I thought it was good for her to get away. Where are you going?” Now I know he was laughing at me. Just what the hell did he find so damn funny? And why wasn’t he questioning my sudden interest in his daughter’s whereabouts?

“Where the hell do you think?” This whole damn family was a pain in the ass. It took me a while to register a flight plan at short notice and find a place to stay at least for one night, but I got it done and was on my way in an hour. I didn’t even stop to pack a bag, the thought of her spending one more second than was necessary feeling what I was sure she was feeling left a hole in my gut.

How could I have fucked up so badly? ‘I’m going to be more careful with you from now on I promise.’ I said the words out loud to myself as I sat alone in the cabin of the gulfstream. I was too afraid of how much I might’ve hurt her to think of anything else as the plane flew through the sky getting me closer to her.

I’d had the sense to call her father back from the airport to get the address of this Ann-Marie’s beach house. I wasn’t planning on fucking around once I landed and as soon as the plane touched down and I was cleared I went to the car rental place and was on my way. I didn’t call ahead or any of that, just showed up at the house where I was met by a blonder version of hellcat.

By that I mean she was a young socialite type, but no one was like my girl. “I’m here for Camille.”

“You must be Grant, you fucked up I hope you know that.” I wasn’t even about to have this conversation with her. I guess the lift of my brow and the stern set of my face tapped her into that fact.

“She’s down on the beach, just don’t screw up this time.” I relented enough to be civil since she didn’t seem to have any interest in standing in my way. “How is she?”

“She’s better than when she showed up yesterday. I know that Marcy person so I was able to convince her from what she told me that maybe you were telling the truth, but you know Cami.”

“Thank you.”

“No problem, the beach is private by the way and I’m about to head to lunch with my new guy so you two pretty much have the place to yourselves.” She gave me a cocky grin before turning back inside. Huh.
