In the past, part of me certainly wanted to get closer to her, but I wasn’t a cheater. I cared about my girlfriend, and I cared about my girlfriend’s relationship with her best friend. So, I moved forward without trying anything or dwelling on anything.

But things were different now. My desires were stronger, and we were two people of passion with no limitations.

“Thank you for sticking up for me earlier. I wasn’t even sure if I could get Paolo to agree and let me work with you guys,” Zoe told me, our steps becoming slower as we approached a dark blue vinyl house with a wooden front porch.

Something told me that she didn’t want the night to end so quickly either. I placed my hand over the one holding my arm as we walked up the steps to her front door, standing under the soft glow of the porchlight.

“You would’ve convinced him eventually. You’re probably one of the most stubborn people that I know too,” I said with a teasing grin.

Zoe smirked and rolled her eyes at me, still not letting go of me as we stood close to each other.

“Still. Thanks,” she replied.

I shook my head, not wanting her to thank me when she was the one who put in all of the hard work. She was the one risking so much by deep diving into this case.

“No need. I hate the circumstances, but I’m glad you’re back in town,” I told her as I turned to face her, my hands brushing down her arms.

Zoe smiled up at me.

“It’s weird being back, but I suppose there’s a silver lining,” she replied.

I could only imagine how much darkness loomed in this town for her because of her mom passing a few years ago. It was a blow to the entire community.

“If you need anything, you know where to find me,” I said as I brushed a strand of hair away from her face.

Zoe’s breath hitched as my fingertips brushed her cheek. Her eyes swept down my face to my lips and then back up to my eyes again.

How could I resist? How could I not give into my desires as they swallowed me whole? I was only human after all.

Succumbing to the magnetic pull between us, I stepped toward her and closed the distance between us, my lips crashing against hers. My hands lifted to her face, drawing her closer as our lips brushed and moved in tandem.

Zoe slid her hand up the back of my neck, kissing me harder as the seconds ticked on.

Heat burned hotter and hotter beneath my skin, working me up more and more as our hands roamed. Giving in like this felt like taking a breath of fresh air after years, and I wanted so much more. Could she feel my desire for her?

Zoe’s chest pressed against mine as my hand rested on the small of her back, pressing her flush against me. I couldn’t stand a single inch of space between our bodies. When my teeth grazed her bottom lip in a light bite, a soft moan drifted from her, making desire thunder through me.

I slid my hands along her figure, caressing her delicious hips and the enticing curve of her ass as she gripped my shirt tight enough that she could’ve ripped it off. Hell, I wouldn’t mind.

Zoe slightly parted her lips, and I felt a flash of her wicked tongue. The same one that had spoken words that I’d held onto for years. Fuck, she had me so hooked, and as I swiped my tongue into her mouth, I reveled in how good she tasted.

I couldn’t even imagine how good she tasted between her soft thighs pressing against mine.

Shit. I needed to stop now, or I wouldn’t be able to. I pulled away and rested my forehead against hers, catching my breath as a smile crossed my lips. She just got back into town. I could wait a little bit longer before making things even more complicated.

“Goodnight, Zoe,” I said, fighting every urge I had to kiss her again.

Zoe rested her hands on my forearms, her eyes slowly opening to meet mine.

“Goodnight, Matty,” she replied in a breathless voice.

This wasn’t the end for us, but how far would we go?

Chapter 7

Zoe

What in the world was I doing?

I grimaced as I drove to the station the next morning, my head still spinning from my kiss with Matty last night. I probably shouldn’t have kissed him back, given the fact that I was here for business, and he was part of the business.

But that kiss… it was amazing. Hot and sweet and electric. I swore my lips tingled just from thinking about it.

I had thought about kissing him a handful of times in high school, but I never expected to actually do it. Now that I had, what came next? It wouldn’t be a good idea to deepen things, but I would’ve been lying if I said that I didn’t want to kiss him again.
