There’s no way I’m getting any sleep tonight.

Chapter Eleven

Heidi

I pull the stopper on the tub before I crawl out and wrap a robe around me. Reese’s home is breathtaking. His bathroom reminds me of a fancy hotel suite, and I can’t imagine him in this place all alone. It’s a lot for a single man, but I guess he must come from money. I don’t think a professor could afford this even with his doctorate. Especially at his age.

Running my hand along the cool stone on the double sinks, I think about how this bathroom is made for a couple. It’s wrong for me to be in it, because I’m guessing this is a home he’s making for his future wife. Not that it matters, I suppose. Most men with this lifestyle have no plans of ever being faithful, so what would it matter to them if other women used the space before? I honestly don’t think men connect things that way.

My stomach sours at my own stupid thoughts. I don’t know why I’m poking at myself and getting all worked up over nothing. I should be thankful. I can’t remember the last time I had a soak in a tub and a meal like the one I had tonight.

I’m about to crawl into a giant comfy bed and know for tonight that I’m safe. I don’t need to shove a chair under the door handle because I’m worried the lock wouldn’t be enough. I don’t need to be scared that someone is on the other side waiting to hurt me. I’m safe, but still my mind focuses on all the bad things.

Staring at myself in the mirror, I wonder if that’s a good thing. Everything comes at a price, and focusing on the bad helps me fight this attraction I have to Reese. I want to protect my heart because he could so easily take it from me. It doesn't take much to get me to do whatever it is that he wants. He has this way about him that is sweet but also demanding and it has me crumbling.

The lights flash overhead, drawing my attention toward one of the windows. I peek out to see the rain coming down hard. I’ve always hated storms for as long as I can remember, so I hurriedly get ready for bed. I want to be asleep if the house loses power so I have no idea how bad it gets. I pass by my stuff and go into Reese’s closet to grab a shirt. I decide to leave the bathroom light on with the door cracked to let some light into the bedroom.

As I pull the blankets over me and snuggle into the giant bed, the smell of Reese surrounds me. I pull one of the pillows to my face and breathe more of him in, and somehow even the scent of him turns me on. I press my thighs together as my mind drifts back to our night tonight, but as I do, thunder booms so loudly it feels like it’s right outside the house.

I lift my head from off the pillow to see the bathroom light is off. I flinch when the lightning flashes and thunder booms once more. Before I know what I’m doing, I’m out of bed and rushing to Reese’s door. I shouldn’t do this, but there is no stopping me now.

Slowly I turn the doorknob, not wanting to wake him as I slip into his room and tiptoe closer. My eyes have adjusted better to the darkness, and I can see the outline of him in the small bed, and it pulls at my heart that he gave up his giant bed for me.

I can’t understand why he keeps being so good to me. He could have pushed for more tonight by saying we needed to share a bed. I’m sure one thing would have led to another. God knows if he put his hands on me I would have given in. I can’t stop thinking about his touch and how my body aches for more.

Thunder explodes once more, and a scream bubbles out of me before I can stop it. This time it shakes the huge house. Reese is on me. I’m on the bed and pinned under him before I can catch my breath.

“Heidi.” He barks my name.

I’m not sure if he’s yelling at me or telling himself it’s me and I’m not someone who’s broken into his house. No, I’m the weird girl who creeped into his room and was standing over his bed.

“I got scared,” I rush to say. His tight hold on my wrists eases a fraction, but he doesn't move.

My body starts to respond to how we’re positioned, with him over me, pinning me to the bed beneath him. My thighs are spread wide with him wedged between them. I quickly realize I hadn’t put any panties on after his shirt, and I can feel his erection pressed against my sex. Only the thin layer of his boxers separates us.
