“On that, we can agree. Kayden deserves a fuck of a lot more than me,” I mumble, wishing I could see her, if only one more time. I know she’s blaming herself and I don’t want that. I underestimated Dragon and because of that, I fucked all this up. I should have done things differently and I sure as hell should have protected Kayden better.

“It’s good you know that. Does that mean if I let you go, you’re going to get the fuck out of Kentucky?”

“If that’s what you want, man, you might as well kill me. I’m never giving Kayden up.”

“That’s some strong words for a man in chains at the moment,” he says leaning back in his chair and taking a long pull from his beer.

“Don’t suppose I can have one of those?” I mutter, eyeing his bottle.

“Sure,” he says, surprising me.

He nods over to his man, Dancer, who frowns at him but brings me a beer out of a small fridge. He hands it to Dragon, frowning at him. Dragon puts it down at my feet.

I know it’s impossible, but I still try reaching down to grab the damn thing. The chains around my wrists pull, but there’s no way I can reach the shit.

“You’re a fucking asshole,” I mutter, leaning back against the wall.

“I thought the chains were a poetic touch,” he smirks finishing off his bottle.

“My woman must have taken after her mother,” I mutter, lying through my fucking teeth. I’m starting to see why she’s so damn stubborn.

“She’s not your woman, motherfucker. She’s my daughter.”

“If I make it out of this, she’s my woman. You need to get used to that, because I’m not a fucking kid that’s going to walk away from the best thing that’s ever happened to me. I’m keeping her. You got a problem with that, you might as well go ahead and kill me so I don’t have to hear your damn voice constantly.”

“You’re either brave or the stupidest son of a bitch I’ve ever met in my life. Look around you asshole. Do you think I’m playing a game here?”

I don’t say anything. Instead, I use my bare feet, curling them on each side of the bottle and lift the fucking thing up high enough the chains on my wrists let me grab it. It hurts like hell, because my body has been battered. Pain shoots through my damn shoulder, but the pain is more than worth it as my hands grab the beer and I take a long, cold swig.

Dragon surprises me by laughing. I look over at him out of the corner of my good eye.

“Damn, Chains. I could almost like you if you hadn’t fucked with my daughter.”

“I didn’t fuck with your daughter. I fucked her and I plan on doing it again.”

“And just like that I want to kill you. You son of a bitch, my daughter is not some girl you can make a whore out of,” he growls.

“If you call my woman that one more time, I don’t care if Kayden loves you, Dragon, I will find a way to fucking kill you. I was the first man between Kayden’s legs and I’ll be the fucking last.”

Dragon looks at me, but I’m done. He’s said that shit way too much about her. He’s her father, he should know what a special woman she is. He should cherish it.

“Enjoy your beer, Chains. It may be your last one,” he says, not saying anything else. He gets up, slaps me on the shoulder, and walks away, leaving me alone.

And confusing the fucking hell out of me.

Dragon

“Dragon man, you’re fucking up,” Dancer says the minute I walk in the door. Bull, doesn’t say anything, but he nods his head in agreement.

They’re sitting in chairs that are placed in front of the glass wall, watching Chains. It’s a two-way mirrored room. He can’t see us, but we definitely can see him. That means, they’ve seen me talk to him, they hear what he says when we talk and I know they like him… I know because they’ve told me.

Shit, I think I kind of like him.

“If it was Jazz he was fucking around with, I don’t think you’d be singing that damn tune,” I mutter, leaning up against the wall, watching Chains and trying to figure out what in the fuck I’m doing. Kayden’s not talking to me, Nicole is barely giving me the time of day and something has to give soon. Hell, it’s getting to where I dread going home.

“Shit, if it was Jazz, I’d be celebrating,” Dancer says. “I swear to fuck that girl is going to kill me off. How a kid that was as sweet as she was, could turn into such a …”

“Spoiled brat?” Bull adds helpfully.

“Fuck you,” Dancer mutters, but he sure as hell doesn’t deny it. Then again, he couldn’t. Jazz is spoiled and everyone fucking knows it. She’s a good kid, but she definitely thinks the world owes her. Dance and Carrie spoiled her for sure, but no more than the rest of us did our kids. I’m not sure what in the fuck happened with Jazz, so I don’t say anything—mostly, because there is nothing to say.
