They all insisted I call them my aunties.
I would buy them all flowers, I decided. I already went over there and helped out when I could, especially the heavy lifting around the holidays and on garbage day. But I wanted to do more.
And I would do more.
I shrugged off the issue with the hose. Maybe I would get one of those wifi security cameras they sold online. But not today. I had to get to work. If there was a lull at work I would check the available options on my phone.
For now, I had to get a wiggle on.
CHAPTER TWO
Drake
“Earth to Drake, come in Drake,” Mac said in an amused tone. I’d slept in Sunday, finally falling asleep around dawn for a few hours, then driven to the hospital. I’d sat in that damned parking lot for almost an hour before I realized how foolish I was being.
You are dumb as fuck, Drake. For about fifty different reasons.
Number one, the girl might not even be at work. Even if she was, who knew how often they actually took a break or stepped outside. I chuckled ruefully at that thought. Sunshine didn’t exactly read to me like a smoker.
And if she did step outside and saw me, she might think I was stalking her. Which wasn’t too far from the truth. Hell, if I had any idea where she lived, I would drive by her house a couple of times a day like a lovesick teenager on a ten speed.
To say I felt silly about the whole thing would be an understatement. To say I was already thinking about going back to the hospital, fruitless as it was, would be another understatement. I felt a wild urgency to see her again. I could barely stop thinking about her at all.
You are obsessed, pendejo. She probably doesn’t even know you are alive. And you don’t even know her damned name!
“But I will find out,” I vowed under my breath. I meant it too. Come hell or high water, I would find out her name.
I would find out everything about her.
I particularly wanted to know how she tasted, felt, and how she might look when she woke up in the morning after a long night of lovemaking. A very, very long night. Just thinking about it was making me hard.
“What did you say?” Moose asked me.
“Nothing,” I muttered, I shaking my head. I tried to focus on my job, but it was a lost cause. Thankfully, I could do construction with my damned eyes closed and half asleep.
I texted Cain during my break. He was my only hope. The head of the Untouchables MC up the coast had his own security firm. They could find tits on a bull, especially for one of their own.
Since our clubs were more than friendly, I included myself in that category. I just hoped he did, too. I was counting on it.
Anything yet? I texted.
His rapid response made me grit my teeth. News travelled fast. And the guys all loved to kick a fella when he was down.
Chompin at the bit?
Yeah, man.
Heard you got bit by the love bug.
I swallowed my pride and sighed before pecking out a response. There was no point in denying it. Apparently, the word was out. It didn’t surprise me. I was the last person anyone would expect to fall for a girl. A nice girl at that.
Yeah, I did.
Welcome to the club. It’s a bumpy ride but there is paradise at the end of it.
Well, color me surprised. Cain hadn’t taken the piss out of me. He fucking manned up and welcomed me to the club like a true brother. I had to admit, that made me feel better. The idea of Sunshine as my old lady… grilling on a Sunday afternoon with the club after a lazy morning rolling around in bed… well, hell that did sound like paradise. I just had to convince her of the fact.
Of course, she probably didn’t even know I was alive. Not yet. But she would. Hopefully, she would be on board with my plans.
Thanks, man. I don’t know anything about her.
Yeah, it happens like that sometimes. What do you need?
Her name, for starters.
Oh Jesus, Drake. You crazy ass sonofabitch.
Please leave my mother out of it, I joked.
Just fucking with you. I put Trace and Vice on it. I’ll tell them to move you to the top of the list.
Thanks man, I owe you one.
Yeah, you fucking do. Happy to do it, man.
I slid my phone back into my pocket. I took one look at the wood I was cutting and handed it over to Jersey Mike. Mac raised an eyebrow.
“Probably better if I don’t handle sharp objects today.”
He stared at me. Then he blinked. And then Mac let out a guffaw so loud, everyone on the job site stopped and stared. The man was soft spoken. Never vulgar. Never loud. Never taking the piss out of you for his own amusement.
