I know the position is still open, so I make a pitch for it because it’s where I belong. “I want to be COO.”

“Chief Operating Officer?” His brows pinch together. “That’s a step down from co-CEO.”

“I know.” I nod. “It’s also the position that fits me best. You’ve always been the big picture guy. I’m the one who can implement what you envision. I can get the job done. I can be out there working on acquiring even more companies so we expand our reach further.”

“I’ll be your boss.”

“And my brother,” I remind him. “I’ll do good work for you…for us. I’ll make Grandmother proud.”

“You’ll make me proud too.” He slides to his feet to extend his hand to me. “You’re going to be the best damn COO this company has ever seen.”

CHAPTER FIFTY-TWO

Sinclair

As soon as I step off the elevator, I spot the man I love.

Jameson raises a hand in greeting. “Sweetheart, I’m over here!”

I let out a small laugh because he must not have noticed that I was staring right at him.

As I approach where he’s standing, I smile at the man next to him.

Holden, dressed in a gray three-piece suit, looks every inch the consummate businessman.

Jameson, on the other hand, is rocking a T-shirt and jeans. When he left the penthouse this morning, he had a suit jacket on, so I can only assume that he ditched it when he got to the office.

He opens his arms as I near him. I go all in for a hug because I’ve been craving this for the past few hours.

I spent my morning working on the book proposal I’ll present to my brother soon. I’ve been putting that off because I want it to be the very best it can be, but Denia and Carrick’s love story is one for the ages, and if I know my brother as well as I think I do, he’ll leap at the chance to take it to print.

I step back from my embrace with Jameson to greet Holden. “How are you?”

“I’m good, Sin.” He pats Jameson on the shoulder. “This one has big news to share with you.”

My gaze shifts from his face back to Jameson’s. “Really? What is it?”

“I had lunch ordered in for us,” he explains as he glances over his shoulder. “We’ll eat in my office if that works for you.”

“It does.” I nod my approval before turning my attention back to his brother. “Will you be joining us, Holden?”

“Not today.” He squeezes Jameson’s shoulder. “I’ve got a few things to take care of, and I need to prepare for my interview with a famous writer. She’s working on a project about two of the greatest people I’ve ever known.”

I playfully slap Jameson’s chest. “You told him?”

“Just now,” he admits. “I spilled the beans when you were on your way up. He’s all in, too, Sin. He’ll do whatever it takes to get this book released.”

“It’s not a book yet,” I remind both of them. “Hopefully, one day, we’ll be able to cross the street to Beaumont Books and see it on a shelf.”

“I have some pull with that company.” Jameson laughs. “I’ll ask Kalon to put in a good word with his brother when the time comes.”

I smile because I know he’s speaking the truth. The fact that Kalon’s family owns one of the largest bookstore chains in the country is a definite positive when it comes to distribution.

“However this book gets to print, we’ll get it in front of people,” Holden promises.

“We will,” I agree.

“Lunch awaits.” Jameson wraps an arm around my waist. “Come with me, sweetheart.”

“I can’t believe you’re COO.” I wipe my hands on the paper napkin that has been on my lap since we started eating. “It’s the perfect fit for you.”

Jameson glances toward the window of his office. “Do you think a storm is rolling in?”

I look in that direction. “Maybe. What did Holden say when you told him about your covert Carden work?”

He huffs out a laugh. “Covert Carden work? You mean how I snuck around the globe ironing out the differences my grandmother had with her competitors?”

“So you were a candy referee then.”

He points a finger at me. “I like that.”

“I like you better than anyone,” I whisper.

“I fucking love you.” His eyebrow perks. “What were you up to this morning?”

I lean back in the chair. Once we got to Jameson’s office, he directed me to one of the leather chairs that face his desk. He sat next to me. We talked while we shared a sandwich and a salad.

Dessert brought a tear to my eye. It was a crème brûlée from Sweet Bluebells. We shared it in silence, staring at each other. It was the perfect ending to our lunch.

“I worked on the proposal for the book.” I don’t bother defining what book because Jameson knows I have a sole focus right now. “I think I have a title for it.”
