We made it to his bedroom, where he gently laid me down on my back.

I waited for the sinful demands to spill from his lips, but none came. Instead, he took his time undressing the both of us, separating the actions with lingering kisses along every part of my body.

“I’m yours too, you know,” he said as he gently nudged my thighs apart, settling himself between them. His face was above mine, our bodies aligned, his eyes seeing straight through to the heart of me.

This was different.

I could feel it in the shift in his kiss.

Could feel it in the gentle way he glided inside me, the way he took my body in long, slow strokes, his eyes on mine with every move so he could watch every ripple of pleasure cross my face.

This meant something.

And my heart soared at the silent communication, at the bond I felt growing between us with every passionate kiss, every gentle caress, every worshiping attention.

The words in my heart threatened to spill from my lips as Jim worked my body into a pliant spark of pure, undiluted pleasure.

I love you. I love you. I love you.

I wrapped my arms around him, drawing him even closer as we crashed against each other in slow, intentional waves.

He was everything and then some.

And for this blissful moment, I could pretend that nothing in the world would ever be powerful enough to separate us.

“James, I…” My words trailed off as he snaked an arm beneath my lower back, hauling me up against him as he ground against my clit while pumping inside me, sending me into absolute orbit.

“I’ve got you,” he said, misinterpreting my words, thinking I was telling him I was going to come when in reality I was about to tell him I loved him.

But he did have me.

And his thrusts were like match strikes inside me, sending flames licking up and down my spine until I combusted.

I whimpered as my orgasm tore through me, so powerful I convulsed around him, clinging to him through the intensity of it as he found his own release inside me.

He held me against him, rolling us to our sides as we lay there catching our breath.

And I knew that this was the life I’d always been waiting for.

Now all I had to do was manage to hang on to it.

CHAPTER 14

Jim

“I really appreciate you two meeting me here,” I said as Cannon and Persephone took their seats across from me in the booth at Sweet Water’s most popular bar Scythe. I had to pick a place I knew Anne wouldn’t catch us, and fucking hell, my nerves were on high alert as her sister settled in next to Cannon. “I know your schedule is tight,” I said, flashing Cannon an appreciative look.

“It’s all good,” Cannon said, wrapping an arm around Persephone. “Home game is tomorrow, then we’re away at Christmas.”

I nodded, taking a deep breath to try and get my words straight.

Persephone leaned a little over the table, bracing her hands on it like she needed it for support. “Please, Jim,” she said, her voice severe. “Just be straight with us. How bad is it?”

I furrowed my brow. “What?”

“Is Anne struggling? Does she not want to tell me because she’s afraid I’ll tell our father? I won’t—”

“Oh, shit, I’m so sorry,” I said, not even once thinking that me asking them to meet me here would lead to those kinds of thoughts. “Anne is wonderful,” I hurried to say. “Honestly. She’s amazing.”

Persephone released a sigh I think the whole bar heard, and there was more than a fair share of Reapers who casted glances our way, almost like it was a habit to check up on their own. She leaned back in the booth, settling into Cannon’s side a little more.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “When you called, and then picked here to meet, I just…”

“It’s my bad,” I said when she didn’t finish. “I picked here because I didn’t want Anne to know we were meeting.”

Cannon cocked a brow at me, narrowing his gaze as he scanned my features. Something clicked, and he let out a rough laugh. “Holy shit,” he said, smiling down at his wife. “He’s in love with her.”

Persephone’s mouth parted, surprise lighting her eyes.

“Is it that obvious?” I asked.

“Not at first,” Cannon answered. “But I can see it.”

“Is that why you called us here?” Persephone asked, a little excitement rising her tone.

“Yeah,” I said, rubbing the back of my neck. “I was hoping I could get some advice.” I eyed Cannon, who was the most recent addition to the VanDoren family. “Cannon, I know you mentioned you had some issues in the beginning with…Mr. VanDoren.”

“Issues,” Cannon said, huffing. “He hated me.”

I blew out a breath, my shoulders dropping. “He’s hated me for a decade,” I said. “And you have an NHL contract, accolades, and millions in the bank. If you didn’t have a chance, what kind do I have?”
