“I know.”

She furrows her brows at my words. “How?”

“Back in Michigan” —I don’t specify when, but by the way her features tighten, I know she knows I’m referring to when she was a kid— “you told me about this carnival you went to and how much you loved it. I remember you saying it was enchanting. Actually, you used the word dazzling, and it made me laugh. Well, this isn’t a carnival, but I figured it’s basically the same thing.”

“I love it. I love the freedom, the fun, the possibilities. It’s like anything can happen at a carnival or, in this case, an amusement park.” There’s almost a sparkle in her eyes, and I’m happy to be the one that put it there.

“Let’s go see what trouble we can muster up.”

“I never said trouble…”

“You forget I know you, Pip.” I wink before leading her past a popcorn stand and toward the games.

We spend the next thirty minutes laughing and playing.

From basketball to shooting ducks, we try our hand at every single one. I win Cassidy a few prices, and in typical Cassidy fashion, she hands off the giant stuffed animals to the kids who lost.

She’s something else.

Her need to put everyone first always wins out.

“Where to now?” I ask as we walk away from the ring toss. No matter how hard I try, that’s the one game I can never win.

There’s no question that it’s rigged.

Laughter breaks out beside us, and I pull her in the opposite direction. Together, we look around, walking by each ride. All the lights flash around us. Each attendant tries to lure us to the ride they’re monitoring.

When Cassidy sees me looking at the teacups, she shakes her head.

“No way. That will make me sick. How about the Ferris wheel?” she asks, and I nod.

“Anything you want. This is your night, after all.”

She stops walking and turns to face me. “Anything?” Her lips tip up into a smirk.

I wrap my arm around her back and drop a kiss down on her head. “Mind out of the gutter.”

“Fine. But then you must stop touching me. ’Cause I always have my mind in the gutter when you do.”

With one final peck, I drop my arm and point in the direction we need to go.

“Come on,” I say, interlocking our hands and letting her pull me toward the ride.

There’s a short line. Nothing crazy, which is nice. Cassidy stands beside me as we wait our turn. She looks so happy and at peace.

We both needed a fun night before the crazy starts again.

Who knows how round three will go.

The Empires are a good team. I’ll need to keep my head in the game with no distractions if we’re going to win.

When it’s our turn, we sit beside each other, her body flush with mine. It’s almost as if she’s sitting on my lap.

It’s not like Cass to be clingy, so I wonder what’s up but as we start to make our ascent, she doesn’t say anything, so I chalk it up to the fact that maybe she doesn’t like heights.

It isn’t until we’re nearing the top that she finally speaks.

“I saw this movie once.” Cass bites her lips. “It’s called Fear.”

I pivot my body to see her better, and when our gazes lock, I lift my eyebrow. “I know the movie. Please don’t tell me this is another movie that you watched as a kid with your mom.”

Her eyes go wide, and it makes me laugh. They look like they might explode from the socket. “Oh my God, no. Jeez. What kind of weirdo do you take me for?”

Inclining my jaw down, I give her a look. “You really want to know the answer to that?”

“Not really.” She rolls her eyes. “As I was saying…”

“Yes, please go on. I’d love to hear where this is going. Nowhere good, I assume.” I know exactly where this is going, but I can’t wait for her to say it.

“Well, since we’re on a Ferris wheel, and we’re not moving…I was thinking…”

Wouldn’t take a rocket scientist to know what scene she’s talking about from that movie.

Can’t say the idea doesn’t have merit, so I’m more than willing to oblige her, but I’m still going to give her shit.

“I know exactly what you’re thinking, and they were on a roller coaster.”

“Same difference,” she huffs out, most likely annoyed by my taunting, but she’s so damn cute when she’s like this, I can’t help myself.

“The thing is, I—it’s always been a fantasy of mine.” She doesn’t finish the sentence, so I do it for her.

“To have your pussy played with in public at an amusement park.”

“Aiden.” The shock is evident in her voice. I’m not sure why there’s shock since it’s what she wants.

“What?” I shrug. “If you want me to play with your pussy up here, where anyone can see, I’m going to need you to say the words.”
